This past week, Molly told me that she's enjoyed some of my MM3AM songs but that she wished they weren't all so depressing. My first response was, "Have we met?" My second response was that I was going to try to write something really uplifting this week. But then Patrick decided otherwise. Sorry, Molly; not my fault. Talk to Patrick about it.
As for the assignment, it seemed to me that there were two ways you could go with it. Either an epic, powerful restatement of multiple musical themes that ties the whole imaginary storyline together … or something devastatingly simple. Since we just did our epic prog tracks, I thought I'd stay with the latter this time. And Patrick privately challenged me to keep my production as stripped-down as possible this week. Done and done. This is a live take, with just electric piano and voice. A little fancy distorto-processing on the vocal, but otherwise about as simple as I can get.
lyrics
your shoulders tensed
your fists are clenched
your tag is showing
your toes are pinched
a few split ends
a patch of gray
these things I notice
as you walk away
I thought I had this
I lost the way
but in the end
what's it matter, anyway
you couldn't help me
but thanks for trying
I won't get up
I'm done with lying
that's it, I'm done, you win
oh well, goodbye, amen
