It starts as a smoke of a whisper in my room They talk amongst themselves, but I hear them, too Cursing and clawing with fire in their nails Dogs from the bowels of the fires of Hell "We'll wait until he sleeps then set action to words. Alight in the night afore our story be heard." Through the joints in the floorboards their growling slowly grows It rumbles and churns and nips at my toes Forsaking sleep, I keep watch in its stead To drowse is to die, to dream to be dead Candles in their service as sentinels in the night Guard against the hell that comes without light For the past week gone no sleep has come Kept up by the hiss of the Devil's forked tongue His flames grow warm from under my bed Turn pillows to ash 'neath a weary man's head There's sulfur in the air Rotten flowers in a tomb A shadow on the wall Of the hangman's noose I've withheld it til now but let it be said It's been seven days since I left a man dead Now Judgement has come in the form of a flame And a horseman on high, he's bellowing my name
2.
Oh Allison let down your hair Show the world all that you are You cast a shadow that they don't see Shining bright light from afar I know your secret, the weight you carry Day by day, by day by day The pain is heavy at times crippling Not deserving of your grace If I had healing hands they'd be yours to keep Please take the ace from my sleeve When you stumble I'll always break the fall In brighter days I believe I believe
3.
V/C I took a chance did my best gave my all put myself to the test but I wound up dry V/C I listen to music to distract my mind but sometimes I wind up dry B The river will ease my mind cool water flowing through me I want to get in and reset time float downstream V/C and when I get out I'll bring water to you lend a helping hand It might be your turn to be dry Interlude Does the sun seem to be in your eyes? Have you waited long enough? Did you see a mirage on the sand? An oasis to fill you up? V So many constant distractions I get low and I don't know why you might have to tell me I'm Extended Chorus Parched and I need a drink Walking in the desert, no water pressure in the sink I'm lost in the world, Adam outside the gates I've got dark clouds, but I ain't got rain as of late I will lend a helping hand, I will lay down a road just for you Maybe someday you will do the same Cause you might see that I am Dry

Some mornings don’t get a breakfast, coffee’s a must Pulled in a million directions, feel l might bust Pressures building, stop and walk around Take a breath and slow, slow, slow down No black magic, no secret recipe Need to make room for, inner peace Lot to say, more to write Every day, overnite Mind working double time Pack it in, always tight Love to take a BIG bite Double time, double time So many things that I’m hit with, want to do it all By the time that I get to the weekend, hit a brick wall Order pizza, pour a big round Take a breath and slow, slow, slow down No infomercials, no app to set you free Need to make room for, inner peace Lot to say, more to write Every day, overnite Mind going double time Pack it in, always tight Love to take a BIG bite Double time, double time

------Lyrics------ Sally’s in the big top again Losing all the games didn’t play to win Some green could go a real long way Early morning heat on the wicked side She ain’t got nothin’ left to hide Turn a few tricks get kinda paid ‘Nother wild horse come to take her away Push a little bliss into another ruined vein Snuff a little rooster, she got it made What’s it all about ain’t always clean Paradise living and morphine dreams Breath of fresh air and some nicotine Take another chance make a few mistakes Rarely go the spoils to the one that waits Lost a piece of herself along the way Turnstile clicking to the morning train Concrete jungle ‘neath the pouring rain Feel herself slowly slip away Dealin’ with the devil and a title loan Tried to make a call but they cut the phone Seems there’s a system been put in place ‘Nother wild horse come to take her away Push a little bliss into another ruined vein Snuff a little rooster, she got it made What’s it all about ain’t always clean Paradise living and morphine dreams Breath of fresh air and some nicotine Take another chance make a few mistakes Rarely go the spoils to the one that waits Lost a piece of herself along the way Sally’s in the big top again Losing all the games, gotta pay to win Some green could go a real long way

I’ve set the town alight again and foiled the fates of fools I’ve once again forgot my evening prayer I’ve blessed the damned and raised the dregs, reversed the law of rules But I guess that’s neither here, nor is it there I could’ve sworn the stone would roll, the dead would rise again the intertwined become the twisted pair but you have aged alone, my dear, and time’s a safety pin and I guess that’s neither here, nor is it there I guess that’s neither here nor is it there, and so it goes the worst that you could say, the church bell’s chimed but you and I we know there come a counting, heaven knows so hold me one more time You once in time were holy text, I hung on every word I claimed the tower for my nom de guerre but temples fall and evening fades, a flight for every bird but I guess that’s neither here, nor is it there The dusk sets in, the gloom surrounds the dying dreams of men So here begins the end of the affair and I, for one, have held my word, though faithless, now and then but I guess that’s neither here, nor is it there I guess that’s neither here nor is it there, and so it goes the worst that you could say, the church bell’s chimed but you and I we know there come a counting, heaven knows so hold me one more time And when you come to rest your wearied legs above the fire and read your vesper verses, mouthed, with care oh, will the sins of your omissions pass for what transpired but I guess that’s neither here, nor is it there And did I see you take your place, when sun sets on the ridge where traitors trace great castles in the air down beneath the shadows of the battered begger’s bridge but I guess that’s neither here, nor is it there I guess that’s neither here nor is it there, and so it goes the worst that you could say, the church bell’s chimed but you and I we know there come a counting, heaven knows so hold me one more time
8.
O hallowed cow And the one and the three and the one and the three and it’s following me til I run up a tree O hallowed cow There is no now And the one and the three and the one and the three and it’s following me til I run up a tree Where is the two And four is true O hallowed cow There is no now And the one and the three and the one and the three and it’s following me til I run up a tree The up is down March like a clown The in is out The weak are stout O hallowed cow There is no now (hush) O hallowed cow There is no now
9.
Ignore the Signs, Tyler Millard V1 I’ve been here before and I’ve seen this door and I know what’s on the other side. We made this pact, swore we’d never go back, me and my heart, man, at least we tried. Pre-Chorus Now every ugly thing about us is beautiful tonight. Everything that seemed so wrong is suddenly right. Chorus I’m already falling too fast but the feeling is sublime. And I know that I'm going to crash but for the thousandth time, I ignore the signs. V2 It’s a fool that believes that it’s all meant to be and that he lives his life without regrets. So I try to remember back when we were together but I always seem to forget. Pre-Chorus Every ugly thing about us is beautiful tonight. Everything that seemed so wrong is suddenly right. Chorus I’m already falling too fast but the feeling is sublime. And I know that I'm going to crash but for the thousandth time, I ignore the signs. Bridge And I’m only human after all And you should know me enough to know I‘ll call; When I get lonely and I’m back at your door, And I’m back to the old me, pretending there were ever signs to ignore. Chorus I’m already falling too fast but the feeling is sublime. And I know that I'm going to crash but for the thousandth time, I ignore the signs. Chorus I’m already falling too fast but the feeling is sublime. And I know that I'm going to crash but for the thousandth time, I ignore the signs.

Have to what I have to do Whatever that means for me and you Go along and ride the rides White flag flapping from inside Keeps me feeling alive Escapades in rear view Temporary relief, depths of blue Two worlds set to collide No where to run, no where to hide Keeps me feeling alive Stranger to the beaten path Scratches, scars, torn, raggedy clad Sweat burns the eyes Squinting to constantly contrive Keeps me feeling alive Can’t give up even when I should So many reasons to slam the hood Finger jammed and expletive cried Sleep when the embers have died Keeps me feeling alive
11.
(so called Verse) Too much time Not much left to lose You took my children from me So please just put me under (Chorus) I will crawl out I will crawl out from this sleep again I will wake up I will never be the same I will question everything I will lose some faith I will rise again I will never be the same (so called shorter 2nd verse) And with these new wings I guess I will be born again (Bridge) Mercy Me what the hell is happening to me I should have died I should have fallen apart Mercy Me what the hell is happening to me I should have left this place a long time ago

v1: Her face paints a picture that everyone knows One side a ghost, the other a rose A smile as wide as the deep blue sea Why does she keep on hiding from me? v2: Her eyes burn like fire, her hair flows like rain A body that even God wouldn't tame Legs as long as a mid-summer's day Why does she keep on running away? ch: Eureka, I found her, no love can surround her She dreams a new dream before vanishing in air Eureka don't want me, but she sure likes to haunt me I reach out to touch her, but no one is there v3: She thinks that her love might go unreturned That's a hard lesson that we never learn A drop at the bottom of the deepest well The sunlight through the window of the darkest cell ch: Eureka, I found her, no love can surround her She dreams a new dream before vanishing in air Eureka don't want me, but she sure likes to haunt me I reach out to touch her, but no one is there ch2: Eureka, Hail Mary, this game is so very... full of deceit, deception, abuse Eureka, my darlin', you sure are a hard one... to figure out, to figure the truth v4: Her face paints a picture that everyone knows One side a ghost, the other a rose

about

Time to get rolling, kids! Thanks for participating in the new MM3AM Round. I’m going to warn you in advance - Mitchell is taking this very seriously, and his assignments are much more hardcore than we’re used to. I think this will be a fantastic opportunity for those that take it seriously, but I can already tell that this is NOT going to be an ideal round for those of us who don’t always dig in. If you feel you need to sit this round out, that’s understood. But I, for one, can’t wait to dig in!

As you recall, for this round, we have a guest curator, our own Mitchell Snow, who has sent a general introduction about what he wants to do this round. Mitchell, take it away:

"Howdy all!

I'm very excited to take the reins for a MM3AM round! I just wanted to let everyone know that some of the assignments I have in mind may (or may not, depending on your songwriting methodology) require a bit more work than a typical MM3AM round. I'm by no means going to bog everyone down with a lot of unnecessary work or anything, but I will at times be asking you to, as your 8th Grade Math teacher would've no doubt said, "Show your work."

There will be no competitive element and no assignments such as, "Write a cynical country song about recycling," or, "Let's do a Funk tune for a Popsicle commercial!" Nothing like that. Mostly, it's going to be a back-to-basics approach, examining some methods of known songwriting masters (we'll be looking at Dylan, for example), some traditional and non-traditional writing prompts, and an exploration of writing techniques that may be new to you - all with the hope that it will open up some new ways of thinking and improving your writing. Mostly, the focus will be on the lyrical composition of your work and less on the musical (though not always) so, you need not expect anything requiring you to work in odd time signatures or anything like that. Our focus (for the most part) will be on your words.

I'm going to attempt to say at least a little something about each submission and (no promises) try to pick one or two each week to dive deeper into. If you'd prefer that we discuss your work privately, then please let me know before we begin, otherwise, I'll be posting any critiques, comments, suggestion, and so on on your song link on the MM3AM FB page. I hope we can engage in some useful conversation there and I encourage every one to chime in on those discussions.

I know y'all don't have oceans of time and I'm not going to ask anything too crazy of you, but it's my opinion that if you're serious about doing some serious songwriting, then you may as well be serious enough to put in some serious effort. Don't take that to mean it's gonna be a slog. It won't be. There will be nothing that's too time consuming, but some things will take some time. I'm not trying to put anyone off or anything, but if you're the kind of person who likes to post a song a few hours after the assignment is given, this is probably not the round for you.

Assignment, Week One:
I want you (to) show me the way. . . that you structure your songs.

For Week One, we're going to work on just about the most basic element of songwriting - structure. You may write about anything you wish in any style that you'd like, I just want you to think about how you are writing your lyrics and then show us the work (more on that later). There will also be a round long, daily challenge (more on that later, too).

Here's a few things that you might consider:

- Basic verse, chorus, bridge structure, etc.

- Rhythm and Meter
If you're unfamiliar with this concept, here's an explanation:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpsaX2sWbEo

- Rhyme
A. Scheme
If you're using one at all, are you being consistent?
B. Inner-rhyme/ internal rhyme

- Point of view
Unless you're going for an effect, as in Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate," then once you've established a P.O.V. (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person), you should probably stick with it.

- Literary Consonance, Literary Sibilance, Assonance, & Alliteration
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literary_consonance

This list could go on and on. What I want you to do is explain how you've applied these or any other principals/ concepts to your lyric. You can add annotations to your lyrics in the lyric/ notes section on the bandcamp page, or you can handwrite your song with the annotations, snap a photo of if, and use that as your song's cover art. Either way is fine.

No matter which you chose (and this will apply to every song you submit this round), you'll still need to publish your lyrics. Of course, if you've made the choice to photograph your hand-written lyrics, the published lyrics need not be annotated, but I'd still like to see them typed, so please publish them.

I don't want to give any examples by way of explanation, because I want to see what it is you do and what things you consider. Perhaps you ignore all conventions and structures and just write some words for your music and never even think about any of this stuff. If you do, then why? Are you bucking convention? Are you going full-on stream of consciousness? Cool - explain that to me! If you're ignoring all this stuff because you're ignorant of it, there's nothing wrong with that, but perhaps now is a good time to educate yourself. I in no way mean that as an insult and you shouldn't take it as one. What I do mean is, the more you learn about this sort of stuff, the more it will improve your work - even if you decide to ignore it. After all, the best way to break the rules is to first learn what the rules are. If you're ignoring all this stuff because you're lazy, well then, why bother at all?

Now, as to that round long challenge that I mentioned earlier:
Every day (optimally very early in your day - say while having breakfast or morning coffee), I want you write for 3 to 5 uninterrupted minutes. It does not matter at all what you write during this time. Returning texts, emails, or the like is absolutely NOT what this time is for. Also, this is not the time to work on or even think about a lyric, in fact, you do not (and ultimately should not) go into it with any sort of goal in mind. Just sit down for 3-5 mins and write. You can describe the room you're in, write about the weather (one of my personal favourites), write about your pet, write any random word that pops into your mind and make a world salad, write about a commercial that you vaguely remember from childhood - it absolutely does not matter. What does matter is that you don't think about what you're going to write before you start and that you set a timer for however long you're going to write and when that timer goes off, you stop writing. If you are mid-sentence, stop. If you are mid-word, stop. You stop when the timer stops. Stop, close the notebook, and walk away. The content doesn't matter, nor does the word count; it only matters that you write something. You'll do this every day for the entire round. Of course, there is no way of policing this and you can easily cheat and not do it, but you'll only be cheating yourself. I'm sure at least one of you is wondering why I would ask you to do such a thing, but I'm not really gonna explain it, except to say that it's a useful exercise that tends to improve your writing. Your results may vary, but should you chose to put the work in, I'm betting that the benefits of doing this will become obvious after a while.”
