Back on the 3:44
 cold, can’t even feel anymore
I know I need this, there’s a job to be done
sometimes that New York noise just the barrel of a gun
and I ain’t got the nerve, no more Close my eyes til Washington town
dream they turned this train back around
last stop in Trenton
for a smoke on the fly Watch those southbound trains with a tear in my eye
I know this can’t go on for long Wheels are in motion but my fool emotions
 getting the best of me
train keep on rolling Beyond all consoling
all the way to Brooklyn tonight here, cause I’m in on the uptake The pain of a Penn Station headache Do what I got to do, don’t trust these old men Just to count the days until I see you again Can’t come too soon Wheels are in motion
but my fool emotions
 getting the best of me
train keep on rolling Beyond all consoling
all the way to Brooklyn tonight

Might as well be forever This engine's never gonna die It could be broke down and busted on the side of the road But we'll get it going in no time It's been going for a while now It's still going strong Showing no signs of quitting anytime soon We're still truckin' along Til the wheels fall off My desire has no ending The flame burns, lights my way A thirst with no signs of quenching A bonfire that burns everyday You can see it in my eyes A hunger constantly grows A fire that burns deep down inside That nobody knows Til the wheels fall off Flames are comin' out the muffler It's louder than hell People passing by hear it scream and cry And you can just tell Til the wheels fall off

I woke up in '84 in a hospital bed to a Doctor telling my mom you're taking home a healthy baby boy but what she got was a time bomb. I blew up in '06 in a waiting room as a doctor told my dad bottom line... his rods are shot and he's got many fewer than he once had. nobody ever got anywhere keeping track of what they're losing I'm not saying that you shouldn't care; you should, so get up and keep moving I blew up in '08 in a teacher's lounge as I learned to be a blind man I ate my hate from a chipboard box and I drank my fear from a soda can I think back from those darker years from the safety of 2010 kinda sad that I lost that gig, but I lost that weight and found myself again nobody ever got anywhere keeping track of what they're losing I'm not saying that you shouldn't care; you should, so get up and keep moving, keep moving, keep moving, keep moving I blew in 2020 with some poppy hit that people could relate to a little song about keeping your head up, no matter what you're going through nobody ever got anywhere keeping track of what they're losing I'm not saying that you shouldn't care; you should, so get up and keep moving nobody ever got anywhere keeping track of what they're losing I'm not saying that you shouldn't care; you should, so get up and keep moving

about

Mitchell's first assignment for the new year:

""As I go from town to town"

This week, I'll be on the road from Toronto to NC. It's a long, solitary drive. Though Belle Valley and Custards, over Lake Wilhelm, though Clarks Mills and Jackson Center, past Portersville, right outside of Zelienople, on over the Ohio River and down through Heidelberg, Hendersonville, Canonsburg, Huston, McGovern, all the way down to Summersville and Oak Hill West Virginia - keep on a gettin' to Wytheville then soon to Mt. Airy, and Lord willin', straight on to a home in Advance that's just a stones throw from where Yadkin river cuts a line between Davie and Forsyth counties.
I wonder what happens in those towns that I'll be shooting past? Who lives there? What do they do? How would we interact? What might happen if I got off the interstate for a bit in Pennsylvania and grabbed a bite at Rinky Dink's Road House? Or maybe went looking for a little work at a Salvage yard in Sweetwood Hollow? Or stayed a night or two in the Cabins on Miller Ridge? We're gonna ponder those questions and more this week, as we tackle one of my all time favourite song topics, the travelogue.
So what is a travelogue? Well, simply put you'll travel from place to place and tell us about the things you've done and the folks you've encountered along the way. Travelogues can be patched together a number of ways. You can follow a strict course or roam around as you see fit and go where the road takes you.
For those of you who like to pack a map for your journeys, here's how I usually plan my route:

Verse I
Where I'm at, why I'm leaving, and maybe where I'm ultimately headed to

Verse II
Name a town I stopped in, why I stopped and/or what I did there

Repeat for as many verses as I please. Stoping places, saying where I am, who I meet, the things that happen there and so on. I grab a bite to eat. Maybe I lose something - maybe I find something.

Last Verse
Where I ended up. Or didn't end up. Did the journey end or does it go on?

Throw in a chorus between verses (towns/ places) and maybe a bridge (should you cross one) and you have yourself a travelogue.

But as I said, by no means do you have to walk (or drive, or float, or train hop, or a combination of all of 'em, or whatever way you prefer to travel) the path the way I do.
Also:
Remember - the world you create in song is a world all its own. It doesn't have to take place in present day. Your trip could have been 100 years ago or 100 years from now and the roads and towns (and the ways and means by which you get from one to the other) that exist in your song-world may be different than the ones in this world.

I'll see y'all when we all get there,
M. Snow”
