No time to run Time to plead Time to raise your hand Save me your memory Show me your plan A flood of dreams The rush of night The avalanche come down Don’t want to lose this Can’t hold my ground And I was riding so high Up on the crest of a wave Every sinner’s missteps You already forgave And if you told me a fool Ain’t got no right to be blessed I’d tell you again I could have cared less Save me, the Black sea The storm’s aftermath And I caught the hem of Your dress cross my path I came to, I planted my Feet on the ground God help what I’ve done I’m lost in your sound And when you gave me your word I should have blacked out the sun if you told me back then Bout the damage we’ve done Cause where it’s going right now You know it’s anyone’s guess But if you told me back then I could have cared less And now the years, how they’ve gone And I can’t bring ‘em all back And what has happened is done I’m down a lost track If I could tell myself then If I could only confess I’d swear that I wish I could have cared less

I was a monster You were my doctor We were both Misunderstood I had my strength You had your weakness Perfect, the enemy of the good Lost in darkness and distance We float on, we float on... I'm your leader Your protector But my interests Are not yours I'm just a mask For the business Pick your jaws Up off the floor Lost in darkness and distance We float on, we float on...

He said why don't we get married She said no What do you want to ruin a good thing for There's plenty of time for that We should wait Let's do what we've always done And procrastinate He said maybe we should just do it and get it done Things will just get harder further along It's probably much easier than we thought She said why now, he said why not It's just a piece of paper, don't mean a thing we can get a ring out of the gumball machine I've decided that you're the one, this I know Let's go down to the courtroom not tell a soul She said we can do it whenever we decide Nothing's going to change in my eyes He said let’s do it just this once Do what the Bible taught She said why now, he said why not She said don't think it hasn't crossed my mind, it has But what we have is good now, let's make it last Take my hand and we will go home We can be there together all alone Then when they got there, she took his ring Said I was thinking as we were walking Let's get married now, I gave it some thought He said why not, she laughed and said why not

With all eyes upon me Reach down to pick up the bones Before time catches up to me I recognize the calling In the words of another man I once was Long ago when I was younger She would say The leaves begin to die one day Everything is better in the fall I wish they would have seen me Headlines and a dirty coat While I was such a coward And so she went away Said she needed more than I could give her I felt like I had won that day She would say The leaves begin to die one day Everything feels better in the fall But I will take Crisp air and a cool breeze Everything feels better in the fall I began to fall one day Down from the hills of loneliness I began to fall one day From everything I’d ever known Take me down and patch me up Leave me for a while on my own Now I’m alone and now I’m in love Now I’m alone and now I’m in love There is no time, there is no reason There is no answer and I am forgiven Now I’m alone and now I’m in love One day I will follow you But for now I will fall I am always better in the fall of falling out with you

I just can't think of any songs about robots And walks in the valley of the land that time forgot 'Cause it's so hard to be stuck in the middle When you don't play the fiddle and you can't sing in tune It was so cold when the fire started burning The light shines brighter and the wheels start turning I was lost, but I found a sweet navigator Said I'll see you later when I find the right road No matter how I try, I can't find my way home This is not a song, this is a list, you'd best believe Are you ready to receive? While I know I'm wrong, I've run amiss you soon will see This is between you & me You've got no use for anything other than small talk While I'll gladly lend a hand, I prefer Frampton's talk box What's the use of sending messages in bottles Don't hunt for super-models 'less you're willing to grow old In time I'll probably ask you for forgiveness sevenfold This is not a song, this is a list, you'd best believe Are you ready to receive? While I know I'm wrong, I've run amiss you soon will see This is between you & me I just wrote a bad-ass song about robots

Joined the race as I was told, trained to win Fought the battle, tooth and soul, round it went Never question why Scared to be that kind of guy Play to win, shoot to kill Shoot to kill Know that race will play a part, always be Cling to those who look the same, fits comfortably Couldn’t pay no mind Prefer to be with my own kind Play to win, shoot to kill Shoot to kill It’s over when we say it The rules are by decree Steamroll all those sinner types If they don’t look like me Shoot to Kill shoot to kill Finish first, finish last, who gives a damn Race to my oblivion, that the plan? Lonely every single day Got to be a better way Try to care, search the light Search the light End refrain: Stop this race, see my face I choose love Take a stand, Hold my hand I choose love

I don't need you I'm fine on my own I don't need you Just leave me alone Leave me to my ill conceived ends Leave me to my fair weather friends I don't need you I don't need you Don't seem to Know me by name Don't need to Play your damn game Try to make a little money-wise Tired of your favorite disguise Don't need to Don't need you I'mma slave to Them posh dividends I'mma push through To my wicked ends Rain soaked through my best leather threads All this tension goes to my head I can't hear you I don't need you

about

It’s my turn for this round, and here’s your assignment:

Start with a title, a hook phrase or word. During the course of the song, I want that title to mean different things or take on a different inflection. Ideally, I’d love for your song to offer an O. Henry-like jolt at the end, where you flip the meaning of the title around and surprise the listener. I struggled to find examples of this (anyone?), but it’s a common enough trope. If you need to provide a slight alteration on the title in order to complete the effect, that’s OK. An example of this might be Housman’s “One and Twenty”:

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
“Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.”
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
’Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.
