v1: That there's what we call a guitar It used to be the sound of protest But now it won't get you too far You've got a brand you need to protect pre: These days we just let things slide v2: We love our water & air But we're rolling drunk on gasoline We're generally inclined to care But we mostly stay behind the scenes pre: These days we just let things slide Watch the world pass us by ch: So here's a video machine You can see the things that we've seen You can know the people that we've been Sometimes we're stupid and mean --- But put in this VHS You'll want to see us at our best The very best that we can be Watch Mr. Rogers on repeat v3: Sure, there's people on the street But they seem to be doing alright We give them plenty to eat And a bridge to cover them through the night pre: These days we just let things slide Watch the world pass us by ch: So here's a video machine You can see the things that we've seen You can know the people that we've been Sometimes we're stupid and mean --- But put in this VHS You'll want to see us at our best The very best that we can be Watch Mr. Rogers on repeat br: And while we're at it, we're sorry 'bout the wars We're usually on the winning side, but we're not keeping score I know it doesn't look so good, but wait, there's so much more ch2: Here's a pile of books we burned We erased the things we should've learned We love to laugh while the world turns We learned to fiddle while it burns ch: So here's a video machine You can see the things that we've seen You can know the people that we've been Sometimes we're stupid and mean --- But put in this VHS You'll want to see us at our best The very best that we can be Watch Mr. Rogers on repeat Watch Mr. Rogers on repeat

Heaven knows we make a sound Can't keep our feet on the ground We burn the air, living lies Kill our kind, watch us die You'll get used to it The sun still shines on our shit You'll have brighter days If you just stay away Mother Earth with her beauty Shrouded in secrecy Filled with hate, lost control Humankind has no soul You'll get used to it The sun still shines on our shit You'll have brighter days If you just stay away Mountains and ocean blue Forest green's calling you Beautiful from the sky What a shame, it's all a lie You'll get used to it The sun still shines on our shit You'll have brighter days If you just stay away Stay away

we are the sons and the daughters of the living, breathing earth we were born in the desert, raised in the forest everything we needed was laid out before us provided by the spirits in the sky we are the stubborn descendants of volcanoes, floods and fires our ancient hearts were forged from the clay like a stone with the edges worn away we were shaped by the river, shaped by the river of time and we were made to love, we were made to love energy, well she likes to sing as she glides her bow across the string and the old tunes spark and the melodies fly they flash like lightening across the the sky and those same sparks fly between you and I and energy, she likes to perform so she slips into her human form she wrote all the words on every page and plays all the parts on every stage she makes us laugh and she makes us cry but somethings wrong, now she’s stuck in a glitch and watching ones and zeros twitch while a virus coursing through our veins writing bad code in our brains and caught between pride and shame we are the lost and the lonely we’re the driftless and diffuse searching for peace in war torn streets while algorithms confuse our feet here on the edge of a strange new world we are the bored and distracted afraid to look at what we’ve wrought angry and alone we hurt each other we’ve forgotten how to dance and we’ve cursed our mother now we’re praying for grace to guide us home cause we were made to love we weren’t made to hate we were made to love we are the sons and the daughters of the living, breathing earth

I’ve got a map I can easily find my way back home But let’s go a little further See if we can’t find another way There’s no telling what we’ll find What might be around the corner Let’s go a little longer I’ve got a good feeling about this one It’s hard to say what I feel I can’t stay set for too long in my ways I’m not the one that I once was no matter what I know I’ll have to change Crossed a river, crossed an ocean Went to a place I’d never been Should I make my way back home Or should I set out again This road could never end North or south east or west Which way should I choose And when I make my way back home From the paths On which I’ve roamed I can see it anew I’m different than I was before I’ve come to know a little more Than I would if I had remained What I’ve come to realize is the only thing that remains the same Is the fact that I will change Holding on to what I was innocence could never stay It was never meant last The books I read of foreign lands Had a hand In what brought me here today I've changed

I wish it All for You Around we’re just spinning around Sometimes we’re up sometimes down On this mysterious earth Thousands of years have now carried us here All evolution and fear Always death and rebirth But life- as we know it- from day to day is so beautiful in it’s own peculiar way Take the flowers in the springtime, Take a newborn baby’s first cry Remember your first love- it was sweet, but over too soon Take in the sunrise, see the sunset From a million different places Time can’t erase this, I promise And I wish it all for you Around We’re all running around Sometimes we’re lost sometimes found Deep down we all look the same While we are here Just biding our years Let us let go of the fear Let’s each spark our own flame Cause life- as we know it- from day to day is so beautiful in it’s own peculiar way Take the flowers in the springtime, Take a newborn baby’s first cry Remember your first love- it was sweet, but over too soon Take in the sunrise, see the sunset From a million different places Time can’t erase this, I promise And I wish it all for you Take the flowers in the springtime, Take a newborn baby’s first cry Remember your first love- it was sweet, but over too soon Take in the sunrise, see the sunset From a million different places Time can’t erase this, I promise And I wish it all for you

The Labor Day Parade There’s a big blue banner for the Lion’s Club cheerleaders in a pickup truck A couple of veterans shaking hands And here comes the high school marching band And everybody’s trying to be the best that they can be Everybody’s tryna be the change they wanna see They’re giving up time, picking up signs and walking the yellow line And it reminds me… If I forget where I come from If I ever lose my way I’ll find it throwing penny candy In the Labor Day parade There’s a big balloon bed from a furniture store And a Catholic Church tryna feed the poor A beauty queen in a Cadillac And a triple A pitcher signing autographs And everybody’s trying to be the best that they can be Everybody’s tryna be the change they wanna see They’re giving up time, picking up signs and walking the yellow line And it reminds me, yea it reminds me That if I forget where I come from If I ever lose my way I’ll find it throwing penny candy In the Labor Day parade Imagine all the things that we could see And the people we could meet If only we could take another Monday off And open up the street… Cause everybody’s trying to be the best that they can be Everybody’s tryna be the change they wanna see They’re giving up time, picking up signs, walking the yellow line And it reminds me… If I forget where I come from If I ever lose my way I’ll find it throwing penny candy In the Labor Day parade

Salutations from the blue dot cross the dark Saw y’all lookin’ and we ain’t so far apart Inside the record sleeve we’re circled on the chart We’re pretty friendly just as long as you look the part Don’t know if we’re ready for the truth. Do silicon hearts still get the summertime blues? Did Major Tom splash in your oceans blue Are we really much different from you We’ve been left to our own designs And we’ve gotten it wrong more than a few times Do y’all binge watch, do you color outside the lines What’s the tee on ol’ Centauri 9? Don’t know if we’re ready for the truth. Do silicon hearts still get the summertime blues? Did Major Tom splash in your oceans blue Are we really much different from you Hate to say we got quite a few issues Are there crazy people on your evening news? Brain dead clicks and a few viral views? Do your leaders only have money left to lose? Don’t know if we’re ready for the truth. Do silicon hearts still get the summertime blues? Did Major Tom splash in your oceans blue Are we really much different from you You got three suns, does it ever get dark What goes on on Project Longshot Boulevard? If it gets cold does your hyperdrive not start? Anybody got busted spaceships in their yard? Double coupons at the Dark Matter Mart Need unsecured loans for your start?

Hello...How do you do? And I must say - It's so nice to meet you I hope your day is good And you've got plenty of food You may not understand I do this for you Don't come here This ain't no place for you Ain't nothin' for you to do Some kids are cryin' got nowhere to live It ain't no place for you For so long we were all alone Did you think the same? Hopin' all the sentiment is clear You don't need to know my name Don't come here There's got to be a better plan Then to fire on your fellow man The brightest souls engulfed in greed So mean it what they didn't see We're so far away Am I gettin' through So far we're makin' the same mistakes There's hope for the new Don't come here

What does it mean to be human? Depends on who you might meet Some let the money consume them Others project Self defeat What does it mean to be human? For some the power that drives Greed and corruption consumes them No matter the lost lives What does it mean to be caring? Open their hearts to be daring The best and the worst with most in between What does it mean... To be human What does it mean to be special? Depends on who you might ask Some think that only good people Are those that walk on the same path What does it mean to be human? If you ask me it’s all about heart Seeing all those who you come across Like the start.... of a beautiful friendship

Greetings from Sol Through the worm hole On Earth we live We love we spar We talk of peace Yet go to war But all in all We're mostly harmless You may ask why We search the sky Some folks save lives From those with knives we shout we pray we heal we slay Despite it all We're mostly harmless we don't make sense we won't fit in a box We hope you visit our planet paradox Please heed our call And save us all We’re mean we’re nice We’re dumb we’re wise We’re good we’re bad We’re bright we’re mad But all in all We're mostly harmless

Well, they asked me to reflect To say a word in retrospect As we attempt to come connect On distant shores So please let me introduce Us and propose a little truce Before our usual abuse Winds up a war We’re not so bad, once you get to know us Just let us chew on the bloody bones you throw us Sooner or late, we pull our punches We'll all go have martini lunches We’re not so bad in the end Cain killed his brother Eve bit the apple I turn my back for a minute They built the Sistine Chapel tribal and petty Hostile and sweaty They hung up Mussolini then they went and made spaghetti We’re not so bad, once you get to know us Just let us chew on the bloody bones you throw us Sooner or late, we pull our punches We'll all go have martini lunches We’re not so bad in the end We built some pretty nice pagodas And we raised up Abe Vigoda You should try the whiskey sodas Down at Tate's The pyramids are pretty nice You'd look at Uma Thurman twice And even you'd hum Edelweiss If you heard it We’re not so bad, once you get to know us Just let us chew on the bloody bones you throw us Sooner or late, we pull our punches We'll all go have martini lunches We’re not so bad in the end It's true we're seeds of discontent The bottle's dry, the money's spent The Savior that they say they sent, We killed him And most of us show no respect They say we're short on intellect And yeah, one time we did elect A psychopath But we’re not so bad, once you get to know us Just let us chew on the bloody bones you throw us Sooner or late, we pull our punches We'll all go have martini lunches We’re not so bad in the end

about

Our guest curator for Week 1 is none other than Lee Terry. Many of you know him, but for those that don’t, Lee is a Winston-Salem institution, and one of the area’s finest singer-songwriters - certainly one of my all-time favorites! As a member and/or bandleader of Love Bomb, the Skellingtons, Lee Terry & the Near Strangers, the Near Strangers, or as half of his husband/wife duo with our own Susan Terry, Lee has been penning gorgeous genre-defiant songs for several decades now. Thanks for doing this, Lee!

Lee’s challenge goes a little something like this:

"NASA has confirmed that a distant planet has been found to have an advanced civilization … earth will send a transmission containing a database of our history, culture, etc … NASA wants one song from our country's songwriters to send along that represents us … your task is to write it. Any subject, as long as it represents our humanity … try not to start an intergalactic war, though!”
