Stumble for the snooze Shuffle in my shoes Fling joe at my face Lag in the rat race Key in the Cruiser door Turn the wheel to work more AND THE SCENERY IS LOOKING BACK AT ME stop the car and walk on in Say hi to the dog and then Get on it until I can go home Maybe stop for a glass and say hello Pop in the back to wash my hands AND THE SCENERY IS LOOKING BACK AT ME

Inside the box of matchbox cars The photo frames and mason jars She picks her way through all the years
I wonder if she knows Just what she’s hoping she might find Her memories, more deaf than blind But there, beneath the boutonnieres box full of madder rose she used to see them all so clear the crosshatch fades to palettes less than grey But these days now the visions don’t appear And watercolors always wash away Oh, my lost key Don’t you miss me? all cross-legged on the floor Singing songs we don’t sing no more Oh, if you could fly free You’d see right through me Now your gaze is far away
I just wish there was a way To bring you back Her golden stars and Christmas seals Forgot the names but not the feels
the pastels, sellotape, and chalk they’d come alive for her And now she wonders who they were Their names and faces all a-blur
the ones she once would trace and shade
she always saw for who they were she used to see them all so clear the crosshatch fades to palettes less than grey But these days now the visions don’t appear And watercolors always wash away Oh, my lost key Don’t you miss me? all cross-legged on the floor Singing songs we don’t sing no more Oh, if you could fly free You’d see right through me Now your gaze is far away
I just wish there was a way To bring you back

She said You could have called To let me know you’d be late Instead I stayed up wondering if you were ok It doesn’t take a minute to put my mind at ease Pick up a phone say I’ll be later than I thought I would be But you didn’t think about how it would affect me We said for better or for worse and I still feel the same And I’ll get over it now that I know your ok You made it home and that’s what matters anyhow She said I love you But I don’t have to like you right now She said Could you just tell me what’s weighing on your mind I want to help but I can’t just guess every time I know you’d rather act than speak But you’re furrowed brow is rubbing off on me Somethings pressing down on you, by now I’ve learned to read the signs We said for better or for worse and I still feel the same I can help you but you need to call my name We cant move forward unless you reach out I love you But I don’t like you right now She said I don’t expect you to be able to read my mind But look up at me and I think you can read the signs When the world is weighing heavy on my back It would mean more if I didn’t have to ask For you to carry the weight Without me asking from time to time We said for better or for worse to each other out loud But pay me some attention I don’t like to shout You’re all I have but sometimes it’s like you’re no where to be found She said I love you But i have to like you right now

v1: I was never very good at biding my time Always did what I should, but it took me an hour to make up my mind v2: When the time was right, I'd make my escape I'd fly by night, but I'd be home the very next day pre: I keep thinking 'bout the good times I never had ch: I tried as hard as I could to keep everything in place Crystal clear in the middle, just always looks the same Might have been all in my head, but I'm the only one to blame So I always missed the adventure outside the frame v3: When you're looking at the only one who knows you by heart And you're wonderin' if this life will really take you that far pre: I keep thinking 'bout the good times I never had ch: I tried as hard as I could to keep everything in place Crystal clear in the middle, just always looks the same Might have been all in my head, but I'm the only one to blame So I always missed the adventure outside the frame - some sort of solo - pre: I keep thinking 'bout the good times I never had ch: I tried as hard as I could to keep everything in place Crystal clear in the middle, just always looks the same Might have been all in my head, but I'm the only one to blame So I always missed the adventure outside the frame

about

Once again, the assignment is from Mitchell:

"I've been taking some art classes toying with the notion enrolling in art school full time. It's interesting how one form of art can influence and inform another.
Try your hand at another art form for a day or so before you begin working on you song. Draw, paint, take some photographs, do some needle point - whatever you wish. Practice an art that is not songwriting or musical in any way and then return to music and bring into it any lessons you learned while pursuing other creative paths.”

I would like to add to that, if I could (although it’s not part of Mitchell’s assignment, so I can’t hold you to it): in your comments this week, please explain how your non-musical artistic dabblings impacted your songwriting choices. Fair enough?
