The driver straps on his helmet And pulls his gloves on tight The rain has barely started, It’s due to last all night He’s memorized the curves ahead He will not take them slow Saving the brakes, He knows he has miles yet to go The racer knows When the light changes He’s gotta go He knows his job is easy If he keeps the lead Keeps looking in the mirror In spite of his speed He pushes, strains the motor Puts it in the red Keeps his razor focus his eyes straight ahead The racer knows If he pushes too hard The engine blows When you are running the race The only lap that matters is the last one The racer knows Until the race is over You never slow

The fog it covers me A schooner lost at sea I have no sight of shore The fear sets in once more Is it in my mind Or am I going blind Waves crash over bow May I survive somehow My life flashes in eyes I'm praying to the skies If I can't live this day Please take me where I lay Images of home Distant lands I've roamed Water's getting high Is this my last goodbye Throw me a line A faint light from afar Please give me some time Be my guiding star A lantern in the sky My tears they start to dry To live another day To shore I'll make my way A family I shall see A father I shall be The tower of the sand Returns me to my land Throw me a line A faint light from afar Please give me some time Be my guiding star

some people get up every morning with the sun drop a line in the water and wait to feel a tug maybe the water isn’t water maybe the line isn’t a line maybe it’s brick and it’s mortar or maybe it’s all gone online the rules of the game are the same waiting for lightening to strike it’ll turn all the water into wine we’ll be building the dam in the meantime i walk in the middle keep my eye on the line my hands on the wheel and my blessings in my mind and if the air becomes lighter and i’m lifted into the sky i’ll surrender to the wild blue i’ll be ready for the ride the rules of the game are the same waiting for lightening to strike it’ll turn all the water into wine we’ll be building the dam in the meantime it takes a train it takes a railroad it takes ten thousand hands it takes a flame it takes cold steel it takes blood sweat and magic some people get up every morning with the sun drop a line in the water and wait to feel a tug maybe the water’s only water maybe the line is just a line maybe the metaphors too meta for its pieces to align the rules of the game are the same waiting for lightening to strike it’ll turn all the water into wine we’ll be building the dam in the meantime

Feed The Fire Flack suit ready You're moving in Increase the volume where it's never been Say what you want A poison pen Nobody knows When the sky's gonna fall You crave disaster for the sale of it all You can't wait to feel that burn You gotta Feed the fire Fan the flame It's getting hotter We're going insane You gotta Feed the fire Pour on the fuel You're gonna do what you're gonna do Ain't gonna listen Ain't no need Ain't gonna fund the endless greed Of a wheel that's turning A big machine Nobody knows Where it's all gonna land The chips are falling into the wrong hands You can't wait to send that flare You gotta Feed the fire Fan the flame It's getting hotter We're going insane You gotta Feed the fire Pour on the fuel You're gonna do what you're gonna do Stuck in the middle Of a parted plain It's heads or tails in a fixed game Only a Sith speaks in absolutes Nobody knows How to think for themselves It does or does not matter if your doing well You got to light that fuse You gotta Feed the fire Fan the flame It's getting hotter We're going insane You gotta Feed the fire Pour on the fuel You're gonna do what you're gonna do

WHERE ARE THE STARRY MESSINGERS? WHERE ARE THE STARRY MESSINGERS? I DON’T KNOW I SIT AND WAIT FOR THEM YEARS AGO THEY USED TO RIDE THE PLAINS THEY LEFT NO REMAINS GOD ONLY KNOWS ON A COLD AND GREY DAY I SEEM TO WORK MY WAY THROUGH AN EMPTY SUBWAY TRAIN THAT ROLLS BY THE CEMETARY I SEE HALF STRIPPED CARS AND OLD MAN BARS IT ALL SEEMS THE SAME EXCEPT FOR THE LOOSE CHANGE WHERE ARE THE STARRY MESSINGERS? I DON’T KNOW I SIT AND WAIT FOR THEM YEARS AGO THEY USED TO RIDE THE PLAINS THEY LEFT NO REMAINS GOD ONLY KNOWS

Carrie puts her wings on One arm at a time Adjusts the straps and Won’t look back until the Pump’s been primed Turns the flywheel, Sings her nursery rhyme No destination Found her jet-thrust engine In a rubbish pile Where I discard my best ideas When they’ve gone Out of style Stole her mother’s finest Circular file To rig up a sail Carrie will you drop us a line Wherever you’ve gone this time In your sweet fantastic flying machine Where does she think she’s going Fueled with glitter and hope Once again forgot to polish up the Periscope Earned her license while she’s still skipping rope Sometimes I wonder Carrie will you drop us a line Wherever you’ve gone this time In your sweet fantastic flying machine Across seven seas
the Gulf of Cadiz All lights in your rear-view mirror Packed away all your dolls The world’s getting small
and you’re getting bigger each day Carrie will you drop us a line Wherever you’ve gone this time In your sweet fantastic flying machine

Look at all the dead streets closed up shops downtown's lonely wind blows through broken windows of the factory that used to be the town's heart blood used to pump like traffic through my veins when you would call but you left me with an empty heart went away and took it all I'm walking through empty streets shadows and ghosts to keep me company a sign on my chest that says "closed and moved away" it's a dead city heartache all these things i built for you collecting dust not being used slowly worn down as the wind blows by faded words carved in stone you can't recognize used to be a factory blood pumped through and filled the city now it's a home to all of the ghosts in my mind i call my memories I'm walking through empty streets shadows and ghosts to keep me company a sign on my chest that says "closed and moved away" it's a dead city heartache read the message of love i carved into the stone of the city heart soon to be the only remains of a beautiful town now in decay what once was seen from other towns now covered in finds, hardly found it says "through your love I'm given life" as the elements slowly wear it down I'm walking through empty streets shadows and ghosts to keep me company a sign on my chest that says "closed and moved away" I know what it means to be a ghost walking at night through empty roads don't want to go, but don't want to stay it's a dead city heartache

Wrote you a letter yesterday Said the same things I used to say I’ll never ever let you go Forgive me for the lies I told Wanna tell you something you should know I don’t love you anymore I don’t love you anymore Still can’t quit you, losing my mind Raining cats, puddled streets unwind I’ll never ever let you go Forgive me for the lies I told Wanna tell you something you should know I don’t love you anymore I don’t love you anymore *miscellaneous hoopin' and hollerin' ensues*

You weave a path of destruction Calamity churns in your wake Devastation is your proclamation The havoc around that you wreak Damage strewn across the countryside Nowhere is safe from your wrath Error to let you go free As hurricanes quake in your path KAIJU - (solo) won’t be restrained KAIJU - will break his chains KAIJU - can no one stop the pain KAIJU - your terror reigns KAIJU - come the soft rains KAIJU - will No one stop the pain You came from a realm far away Miles of oceans you’ve crossed Arrival should have been joyful Just finding out the true cost Influence always unbroken Like Krakens that rule in the sea Yet I can still see the beauty In the power you wield over me Chorus Passage of time heals all wounds Forgiving, you know not your deeds A river can still change its course You can change your destiny

Who’s got a ladder Let’s climb the magnolia We’ll pickle some petals, it’s May A pickled magnolia Can never get better, But none fear her beauty will fade The younger the flower The softer the petals Beware if she’s bitter to taste A bitter magnolia Will channel her wisdom And powerful medicine make A pickled Magnolia Will never control ya Her petals are spicy but sweet That well worn magnolia Will know how to hold ya When you ache from your head to your feet First boil the water And blanche tender petals Heat up that vinegar wine Add some hibiscus She’ll blush for you sweetly Some sugar will do her just fine A pickled Magnolia Will never control ya Her petals are spicy but sweet That well worn magnolia Will know how to hold ya When you ache from your head to your feet Once she has faded The cones of magnolia Can heal the world’s weariest aches A tincture in brandy will Ease rheumatism Allow you to live for today A pickled Magnolia Will never control ya Her petals are spicy but sweet That well worn magnolia Will know how to hold ya When you ache from your head to your feet

You just watched the world break in two But you, you never looked back ------- While I believe it's true I think there's something we should do And then, we call of the attack pre: Just when you got control of yourself You give it away ch: And every time you build a home in your soul You know they won't stay br: You're just waiting on the heartbreak Another day goes by, still you try You're just waiting on the heartbreak You got nothing but time, nothing but time ch: And every time you build a home in your soul You know they won't stay And every time you build a home in your soul You know they won't stay You're just waiting on the heartbreak

about

This week, it’s my turn for the assignment. I’ve been thinking about various kinds of dichotomies in songwriting, and I’m going to start with this one. Many great lyrics have been written that function smoothly, more or less, on the literal or a metaphorical level. One great example is Semisonic’s ear worm, “Closing Time,” which everyone knows as a great end-of-the-night-at-the-bar song, but which is actually about the impending birth of songwriter Dan Wilson’s son. This week, write a song that functions, in a similar way, on the literal and metaphorical levels.
