There she laid in her gold brocaded gown Springtime raindrops lightly kissed the ground Lost her children, her man he weren’t around Left alone her voice a lonely sound singing La llorona, my baby’s gone away My kids are grown, they telephoned today We spoke briefly, there wasn’t much to say Pray for my youngest, today was his birthday Thought I heard a whisper on the air Was just the wind and my mama’s empty chair Missing my brother, my ma and him died there Both dressed in white with long and flowing hair When daddy left she sat beside the phone Brother man made sure that she weren’t alone I was at school left all on my own When in the lake they made their final home singing La llorona, my baby’s gone away My kids are grown, they telephoned today We spoke briefly, there wasn’t much to say Pray for my youngest, today was his birthday

You took that left when you know you Should’ve gone right You might’ve studied ‘stead of going to that party Tuesday night You played your king when you knew the Jack, he would’ve done the job Shoulda put the pitchfork down Instead of marching with that mob I watched you play it cool when You were holding all the cards You wouldn’t give an inch when they were Selling by the yard I remember back in school you used to Smoke in the parking lot These days you save receipts for Everything you bought I heard you talk in your sleep You still dream, you still dream? You sold yourself so damn cheap Changed your horses midstream Two steps down, one step back Steady as a bowling pin Tell me one more time how you Coulda been a coulda been They say these glaciers move Slow enough at first But you can drink a desert dry if you Build a fearsome thirst It’s a shame your good intentions never filled your penny jar Just like all those rock stars holding court At the south end of the bar I heard you talk in your sleep You still dream, you still dream? You sold yourself so damn cheap Changed your horses midstream sing your song, shout your tale notify your next of kin Tell me one more time how you Coulda been a coulda been

I round the corner for the big reveal Another street, another hill A calico cat sits on a window sill Still as a statue Honeysuckle climbs up the red brick Perfumes the air with its tender scent There’s a chalk heart fading on the pavement Under a broken dandelion Beneath this quiet is a gentle sound Murmurs and humming and rustling around It’s the perfect soundtrack for the hear and now And the sun on the horizon My feet keep moving at a steady pace Nowhere to be but I’m running late Soaking in the scene, thinking about the gate Soon enough it’ll be closing The sun’s kiss and the tingle in the air Is usually enough to quiet the despair But I can’t stop wishing that I could to share This walk with you It feels so young and foolish all this kicking and screaming I know it’s time to cool it with all this whining and dreaming So I’m settling back into this quiet evening One step, one step, at a time I round the corner for the big reveal Another street, another hill A calico cat sits on the window sill Still as a statue

Find Your Fire Find Your Fire Then you will find your way To that place in your self Find Your Fire Then you will find your way In this cold and wicked world Find Your Fire where it is you’ll never know Find your fire any place where the embers glow Find Your Fire would you think you have the strength and the courage to be so bold Find Your Fire maybe you could take the dare and have the stomach to search below Find Your Fire where it is you’ll never know Find Your Fire any place where the embers glow

Don't strain to hear Much less listen Don't let my words fall prey upon your ear I don't much care More than to mention This balance plays my conscience Outstanding cost is dead debt to you Just another loss written off the books But I can't help but feel that it counts What I said, is what I said We played it your way, we played so long We played it your way, we played- so long Think I'm staying? 'Must be out' your rabid-assed mind No shame to stand Call attention To make well clear that justice needs a crutch A listless slate A soft redemption In the eyes of reason I know now it's dead debt to you Just another loss written off the books I can't help but feel that it counts Said it before, I'll say it again We played it your way, we played too long We played it your way, we played too long...

about

This week’s assignment comes from Tommy:
“Write a song drawing inspiration from a quote by one of your favorite artists/public figures/family members/human beings. The quote doesn’t have to be in the song (although it can be). You can just use it as inspiration if you like.”
