Your smile is a lie
You’re trying to hide (but)
It’s all on your face
I know you deserve
Those three little words
You want me to say
But girl, you’re mistaken
My heart has been taken
She took it away
But we can still do
The things we used to
When she was with me
Oh baby, I can’t give you my heart
I hate leaving you out in dark but I’ve
Got no heart I can spare
It’s just not there
I know that you’re sad
Don’t focus on that
Don’t focus on bad
Stay with me tonight
I’ll turn down the lights
And light up your life (yeah baby)
Just let the music play
Melt all your fears away
Passion and ecstasy all through the night
I’ll give you the world
But ooh baby girl, I
Can’t give you a lie (hey!)
Adlibs: I know it’s unfair
I can’t give you my heart, baby
You’ve been reaching for something that’s not even there anymore

v1:
Standing in front of this wonder wheel
Wondering what's the deal
What am I doing here?
Don't tell me how you think that I should feel
I'll probably do my best to disappear
v2:
Might take the back roads, covered in dust
There's something's I must
put away or put behind
There's no way of knowing who to trust
But I'll do my best to keep an open mind
ch:
All the good times that I've had
and the bad, I reckon, too
have all added to this thing
I seem to be going through
No, I'm not leaving home
I'm just looking for something new
v3:
This night ain't useless as I thought it was
We'll do our best because
It's what we do
Ashes to ashes, that ought to be enough
to inspire new adventure
You think that's true?
ch:
All the good times that I've had
and the bad, I reckon, too
have all added to this thing
I seem to be going through
No, I'm not leaving home
I'm just looking for something new
-- some sort of bridge or solo --
v1.5:
Standing in front of this wonder wheel
Wondering what's the deal
What am I doing here?
ch:
All the good times that I've had
and the bad, I reckon, too
have all added to this thing
I seem to be going through
No, I'm not leaving home
No, I'd never leave you all alone
No, I'm not leaving home
I'm just looking for something new

The moment's come
The time is now
Time to figure out if this can work somehow
I'm with you
You're here with me
Still we're hung up on the possibilities
Been down this road before
Don't want to wander anymore
I’ve been waiting
Far too long
For this broken heart of mine to come along
And I think
You’ve felt the same
Could it be these two hearts have a home again
If you wanna be with me
Like I wanna be with you
Show me that you love me
I recall
Younger days
When I didn't care who I hurt by mistake
But now I've changed
A better man
A man who wants to share his life until the end
Love has won the game
I'll never be the same
If you show how me that you love me
Show me that you love me
For all my life I've waited for that one to come along and show me how
How to live for someone else and give me hope in the here and now
The moment's come
To see this through
I've been waiting all along for only you
Show me that you love me
Show me that you love me

I
I went for a ramble
One pale winter’s morn
The sky overhead gave no hint of a storm
I reached for my pipe
But I fumbled my pouch
Match-sticks and tobacco and all did pour out
Hi-O
II
I went for a ramble
One pale winter’s morn
The sting of the air was no cause for alarm
I strolled at my leisure
I strayed from the trail
But this worried me not, for the way I knew well
Hi-O
Then a cloud came and swallowed
What there was of the sun
I wondered aloud,
"Lord, what have I done?"
III
I went for a ramble
One pale winter’s morn
I huffed in my hands and I tried to keep warm
But my fingers were stupid
And deaf to my will
Then the frost bared its teeth and it gnawed at my heel
Hi-O

Stoic in the loss
Grafiti walls and train exhaust
Breathe out
Couldn’t give a toss
Spider blue, no matter the cost
Be loud
Jackson Heights and Queens
Born and raised in New Orleans
Moved out
Back in ’63
Lost her daddy and she blew town
Northbound
Bright lights, big city
Errant girl, living on the tiles
Found a loving man
Promised her the moon
And like the tides he was gone too soon
Gone too soon
Summer, 85
20 years and still lost
Like a child
Taken for a ride
City never sleeps
All hell runs wild
Solomon’s Empire
Makes her home in the alleyway
Behind
The seedy part of town
Where perverts go yearning to
Unwind
Bright lights, big city
Errant girl, living on the tiles
Found her a loving man
Promised her the moon
And like the tides, he was gone too soon
‘Bout that loving man
Loved his drink and then
Rode the lightning out
Shot a man inside
She brought the gun
And now he baits
Hellhounds
Bright lights, big city
Errant girl, living on the tiles
Now beneath Roosevelt Avenue
Mother rides, she’ll be gone too soon
Gone too soon

Painter with oils and words and guitar strings
You make me with I could skate or fly or sing
In that easy way that you do
Like a kite on a summer breeze
With so much beauty and truth
You make me want to be free
You captured the morning air, all crisp and clean
On a notebook page, crowded with desert dreams
And the mirages of the heart
Its always up to some scheme
Coyote has to play his part
It's an endless game of hide and seek
Joni you showed me the world
In a melody and a phrase
From the cessna glass
It’s just a backgammon game
Joni you showed me your soul
In harmony and rhyme
Under the microscope
Of love and loss and time
Companion in my mind, heard not seen
Through all these years, and so many frozen streams
I wouldn’t have it any other way
Deep blues and a little green
Springing spirit into the gray
Beautiful ghost in my machine
I’m singing about you now like you were mine
But Amelia I know you belong to the sky
You are the moon hanging low
You are the sun when it’s on fire
The chickadee and the black crow
You make me want to reach higher
Joni you showed us the world
In a melody and a phrase
From the cessna glass
It’s just a backgammon game
Joni you showed us your soul
In harmony and rhyme
Under the microscope
Of love and loss and time

Here's a piece of art I made
don't know what I tried to say
but when I made it
I thought of you
you can put it where you like
on a wall or on a shelf
you can choose the room
I'd be happy in a closet too
this is so you can take a thought
put it in a place
where you can find it
whenever you look
it can be of right now
it can be of a memory
this is where that thought lives now
remember me
as you will

Kneel, Young Man
Jed grew up in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas
His daddy was a small-town sheriff there
Mama ran off long before he could memorize her face
On daddy it became too much to bear
Daddy’d come home from work with his fists balled up full of grievance
He had Bushmills thick on his breath
Didn’t take too long, before Jed did something wrong
And those fists came flying at his head
He'd say, Kneel young man before your god
For I am he, right now, right here
Young man, don’t beg
For I'll grant no clemency
Won’t help to show fear
At 16 Jed took off in a stolen F-150
With his Daddy’s state issued firearm
The only other thing that he took with him for luck
Was his mother’s gold necklace with a rose charm
A boy gets hungry fast, so he took to robbin'
Any man for anything he had
He felt strong and liked the terror in his victims’ eyes
And the grip of the Glock in his hands
He'd say, Kneel young man before your god
For I am he, right now, right here
Young man, don’t beg
For I'll grant no clemency
Won’t help to show fear
Inside a two-floor false front, just east of Travis County
Jed met a girl whose curls fell in her eyes
He never stayed too long, but every now and then
He had the extra coin to stay for the night
Five months passed the way they came, sweltering and slow
The girl with curls oh she started to show
Jed snuck off in the dead of night, never to return
Left his mama’s rose and a note…
"If I were any good I’d stay, but I ain't
And I got Rangers on my tail who would love to say…"
Kneel young man before your god
For I am he, right now, right here
Young man, don’t beg
For I'll grant no clemency
Won’t help to show fear
The girl with the curls, named her newborn baby Rose
The last maternal act that she performed
Rose knew who to blame when her mama killed herself
She was lovesick, grieving, and forlorn
- Break -
Decades pass and now we're in a Juarez cantina
Jed’s hands shake as he lights a cigarette
He’s thinking of his life, each second a regret
When he feels the barrel of a gun on his head
Kneel, old man before your god
For I am she, right now, right here
Old man, don’t beg
For I grant no clemency
Won’t help to show fear
He felt the blood run hot down his face
He welcomed death and he felt no alarm
The last thing that he saw swinging from her neck
Was his mother’s necklace with a rose charm

Can't help but be the person that I am
Hide out in the darkness, never understand
Linger in the moonlight, Suffer in the shade
Take a bullet, and hand grenade
I'm a creature, of habit - bad habits
I'm a creature of habits, can't have it
Stopped making sense, when I first hit the floor
Opened up the window, slammed the front porch door
Sadly it's ecstatic, wallow in the muck
Obviously I don't give a fuck
I'm a creature, of habit - bad habits
I'm a creature of habits, can't have it

So Many Days
I will not confess
And I would not complain
But I’ve been around the world
for so many days
I’ve been around the world
for so so many days
Spent some time playing Rock n Roll
If you’ve been down that road
then you would know
It’s Covered in quicksand
rather than Gold
I’ve been around the world in
For so many days
I’ve been around the world feel like I’m trapped in a maze
i’ve been around the world it more like 800 days …
I’ve been around the world for so many days
I thumbed a ride on the ole freight train
I arrived empty handed it was such a shame
Looking for Main st standing in the rain
Hands in my pockets searching for some change
Just a crumpled piece of paper that’s beginning to fade
Telephone number I can’t remember the name
I’ve been around the world in
For so many days to
I’ve been around the world feel like I’m trapped in a maze
i’ve been around the world it more like
800 Days …
I’ve been around the world for so many days

She took a 30-year at five and a half
Poured a glass of pinot and had herself a laugh
Went ahead and wrote her epitaph
She knew how this one ends
But the wine went sour and the job went south
Drained the cupboard dry just to feel the drought
And she lost her faith in the words her mouth
Kept lying to her friends
shadow hearts and diamondbacks
You paint us red, we fade to black
They spin the wheel, we lost our perfect pitch
It seemed so real, but now it’s smoke
the dagger vanished in the cloak
It’s hard to tell the scratch marks from the itch
He loved to dig the dirt and drop the hammer down
So he started on the beat down in whiskey town
Made some shady friends, tried to get around
Got a little close to the source
He sang his own praises like a battle cry
Shoulda know better, smoked his own supply
They’re shutting down the paper, left him out to dry
Too stoned to feel remorse
shadow hearts and diamondbacks
You paint us red, we fade to black
They spin the wheel, we lost our perfect pitch
It seemed so real, but now it’s smoke
the dagger vanished in the cloak
It’s hard to tell the scratch marks from the itch

Call me crazy, call me clean
Whichever way it means
to you Fighting for the truth
Questioning the proof
Inspector on the left
Inspector on the right
Discount detectives on the beat
Web weaves rational retreat
Run… back to the before times
Something like 1999
War in the East and war in the west
take up a bottle and you give you my
Best
Take on the solution as our minds meet
Forget again by morning’s defeat
Hope… that we make it out in time
And see past 2099

Let Me Down
Old Black cloud's a'stirring, time to hitch up
Head down to SLO Town tonight
Get them batteries humming, load up
Roll them numbers tight
Look out now 'cause love is breaking
It's time has come again
Let me down, I've had enough
My old brown hat is buried in the back yard
It's time the alchemy's all done
Tonight, it just might be the night, opportunity's afield
We're plowing up the Golden One
Look out now 'cause love is breaking
It's time has come again
Let me down, I've had enough
Carrie knows...
Look out now 'cause love is breaking
It's time has come again
Let me down, I've had enough
My old brown hat is buried in the back yard
It's time the alchemy's all done
Tonight, it just might be the night, opportunity's afield
We're plowing up the Golden One
Look out now 'cause love is breaking
It's time has come again
Let me down, I've had enough
Old Black clouds a'stirring, time to hitch up
Head down to SLO Town tonight
Old King's got me hummin', choked up
I think we've finally got it right
Look out now 'cause love is breaking
It's time has past, again
Let me down, I've had enough

Come lay your head down on my shoulder babe
All our adventures are done for the day
The coats are hanging, the dog’s on the floor
Let’s raise a glass to the great indoors
Drinking in a little home life
We been working hard and it’s time
To party like we’re thirty all night
Ain’t it good to be right where we are?
We don’t gotta paint the town red
We just gotta lay in our bed
Saying "Ain’t it good to be right here?"
Ain’t it good to be right where we are?
No reservations, no RSVP
Nowhere nobody expects us to be
Nothing but freedom and a 1000 square feet
And babe it’s everything that we need

Sometimes I speak before I think
Sometimes I chain smoke while I drink
Oh I get lost in my head
Sometimes I talk to the dead
Oh I know
Just what you're sayin to me
But my mind races on
No it don't wait for me
Oh it don't wait for me
No it won't wait for me
Despite every plea
It won't wait for me
I know I'm late for everything
I'm always low on gasoline
Lost the plans I drew up
For a time machine
Oh I know
Just what you're sayin to me
But my mind races on
No it don't wait for me
Oh it don't wait for me
No it won't wait for me
My mind races on
No it don't wait for me
Sometimes I speak before I think
Sometimes I chain smoke while I drink
Oh I get lost in my head
Sometimes I talk to the dead
Oh I know
Just what you're sayin to me
But my mind races on
No it don't wait for me
