LYRICS - DRINKING WITH THE DEVIL I was drinking with the devil, Late one Friday night We were sitting at the bar, there to watch the Tyson fight A man came up and sat down, he said his name was Bob Then He started whining 'bout his awful job His Boss man was a moron, and the owner was a jerk The Devil said well if it was fun, then they'd never call it work Bob said you can go to Hell, You damn old drunken slob if you're so freaken smart, why not tell us about your job The Devil gave me a grin, and then he slyly said I got a job so cushy, I can do it in my bed I can work from anywhere, and I don't punch no clock No one there to hassle me, and I get to call the shots But when things go wrong, everybody they blame me You know Its been that way, since ole Adam hooked up with Eve I get all of the blame, and the Boss he gets the glory Nobody ever wants to hear, my side of the story It was far away from here, and long before your time before the wars all started, and before there was all this crime It was all peace and love, no one dying by the sword Everything was so perfect, but the Boss Man He got bored One day He started messing ‘round, with some rocks, and dirt and mud Then He made up this planet earth, and he said it this is pretty good He made animals , the trees and the men, he gave them all a home He Put em in the garden, and he left them all alone But the people were so boring, and each day it was the same Every Morning, Noon, and Night, all they did was praise His name So He made him up a serpent, said I got a task here just for you Get down to the garden, Here's what I want you to do Well the Boss he told us all: "this should be pretty cool I gave them a big ole Brain, but I gave them hormones too There’s nothing left to give them, That they don't already have I gave them all free will, to choose the good over the bad If there’s love there in their hearts, They’ll come right back up here But if they reject that Love, I'm going to fill them up with fear and when they mess it up, Because you know that they will I'll just send them all back down, for another turn upon the wheel See This part of the story, this is where I come in when he gave them folks free will, well he also gave them sin Cause you know can’t know happy, unless you've also felt the sad And how can you be good, if you never have been bad God Said: "They’ll need a little help, so here's is what I'm gonna do They need to learn just how to love, so I’m sending down two of you Show them how good and evil both live there in their soul and they are going to have to choose, whichever way they want to go One of you needs to be the Truth, And one the Prince of Lies Each one needs the other, like a coin it needs two sides You got to have some darkness, or you’ll never see the light and If there were no Devil, well you wouldn't need a Christ Forget all you ever heard, bout the fiery pits of Hell That all came from Dante's book, that boy could tell a tale The fight for Good and Evil's, Is there inside of you The Devil can’t make you do nothing, You don’t already want to do The Lord has made you perfect, to be all that you can be Just unlock your heart, You know Love it is the key Yes I am the Devil, but souls are not mine to take but you got no need to worry, because you know I'm on my break There's really no need to fear me, I'm just another working slob I'm here to do the Lord's work, and it's a pretty crappy job See Me and ole J C here, we're both working for the same Boss been a few thousand years, since we both had the same day off. we are just both working stiffs, with a job that hard to do so We wrapped up our work early, so we could meet here for a brew And If you want to join us, We’ll let you buy us both a beer and if that phone should ring, Just tell em we ain’t here

Well there's blisters on my hands From shoveling the sand And the sweat falls on my brow From fighting this old plow Now the rocks are in my shoes They're giving me the blues And when I'm ready to give up I take a big ol' drink from Your Cup It's a labor for Your Love Through give and take and push and shove Now my back it feels the pain From the daily strife and strain And my knees they take a load From this never-ending road Oh my soul is getting stiff As I stand at the edge of the cliff So when I'm fed up in my head I take a big ol' bite of Your Bread It's a labor for Your Love Through give and take and push and shove

I I hear a frail weeping In the darkness there, somewhere beyond the pines My true love, She lay sleeping Don’t you dare awake My Caroline (INST) II A red moth on the mirror Drawn to the moon’s reflected shine The hour Drawing nearer Don’t you dare awake My Caroline — I can see Caroline Hanging wash out on the line So fine and fair, a twist of hair Across her face III Sky quake in the distance A burst of rain to cool the fevered mind The Earth shake, At its insistence But don’t you dare awake My Caroline — I concede Caroline I am yours and you are mine I do declare! Who could compare, Or take your place?

Mind & Body - always Mind & Body - all day Mind & Body - alright Mind & Body - all night Living for the moment, living for the day Breathe in every minute, easier to say Wake up every morning, dream a little bit Hold your loved ones tight and savor all of it Focus on your feelings, try to see the light See the good in everyone, even if we fight Love a little harder, lend a helping hand See someone in trouble, help them understand

Carolina sunshine The stifling of the heat Smell of summer showers The sweet decay of meat Oh Lord I pray Oh Lord I pray Children somewhere laughing Our neighbors were so kind The twilight of the idols A monad in the mind Just for today Please let me stay In grassy hills we staved sunshine In loving arms we intertwined Mom and Dad they said, “so long” Kids themselves, it went all wrong What’s left to say Dad went away Plywood television The passing of the time Mama’s still out working She burnt up all her prime It’s your birthday Just run away In grassy hills we staved sunshine In loving arms we intertwined Mom and Dad they said, “so long” Kids themselves, it went all wrong What’s left to say Dad went away Rain upon the windows Leaves, they hide the ground Running round in circles Smothering the sound What did I say Oh Lord I pray

Oh, the walk right down the aisle, the billion-dollar smile The good guy gets the girl But meanwhile You missed that morning train Stubbed your toe again Left your cake out In the cold rain oh, good times We hardly knew your name Can’t feel the burn Ain’t no heat without a flame Oh, that lush life Gone without a trace It’s not on the menu But it coulda been the case Oh, bee sting on your thigh You turned your red, red eyes You missed me when I walked right By you Oh, the ripples on the shore The way you cried for more You never get just what you Asked for oh, good times We hardly knew your name Can’t feel the burn Ain’t no heat without a flame Oh, that lush life Gone without a trace It’s not on the menu But it coulda been the case

I was sitting in class my sophomore year in college My English professor was dropping some serious knowledge Saw a young lady sitting two rows away looking so sweet And that's when I noticed that she was looking back at me Ran into her at a party and we danced on the dance floor Talked all night and before we knew it was a quarter to four Saw her next day and my heart leapt with glee Till I passed her by, said hi, and she walked right by me It's complicated I'm underrated She's understated It's complicated Got an invite to join her with friends up in DC She had to be serious now, what else could it be Great is the moment when the spark lights a flame Lame, though, when she forgets your name It's complicated And overstated I'm agitated It's complicated I'm not looking for someone to get serious with I just wanna have fun Wanna hang out a bit But it's crazy when it's hazy what she's thinking bout me Don't know how to act, don't know who to be I wish it were easier to go on a date But on a bed of nails she makes me wait This reading 'tween the lines is exhausting to me I guess it's bound to be Complicated I've advocated Overestimated So complicated

I started a fire to keep the one I love warm and my love would gather branches to feed the fire and on and on it went and others came to warm themselves and they brought sticks to make the flames higher is there anything in this life that's pure good with out the bad I don't think so if it can keep you alive it can also make you dead you can start a fire to keep you warm but don't leave it unattended it is wild and to stay alive it must spread I just can't wait til I know you only see after it's done lightning never strikes in the same spot twice can I keep this fire going or will I have to start again when it comes to luck you never know when so I do with what's been given after the fire's grown do I keep my cards close or do I open my hand to let others see do I let my secrets out do I let strangers in do I open it up or keep it a mystery is it luck or is it fate that flashed in front of me and if its luck, is it good or is it bad am I part of some cruel joke do I tend this fire forever til I'm dead or gone mad I just can't wait til I know you only see after it's done lightning never strikes in the same spot twice can I keep this fire going or will I have to start again when it comes to luck you never know when so I do with what's been given

Time out of mind Take me with you Golden pages Purpose laden Courtesy of the wind Her crested veil Fresh out of time Let go with me Golden sunset Stretching shadow Nighttime sweetly intones Her secret song Fish and fire And morning dew Fair ye well now Scabs and scars And loves untrue Fair ye well now Tired soldier stand Your strong shoulder still Lift the veil And sail away

Born bipolar on the equinox With his nose to the grindstone He carved himself out a little workshop In the basement ‘round ten years old He drew cartoons by the light of the moon Melted down GI Joes Made plaster casts out of household trash Wrote screenplays and manifestos He was a painter and a singer Writer, actor, and the bringer Of a knee slappin’ comedy show He was a painter and a singer Writer, actor, dead ringer For his Scottish-speaking alter-ego All that lovin’ labor Calms a restless soul But all that lovin’ labor Takes its precious toll Followed his nose out to Hollywood To see what all the fuss was for Hopin that maybe somebody would Take a chance on an Alabama boy He was sharp as a tack with a monkey on his back And a fine portfolio But a lone soldier don’t love to rub shoulders Over cocaine and merlot He was a painter and a singer Writer, actor, and the bringer Of a knee slappin’ comedy show He was a painter and a singer Writer, actor, dead ringer For his Scottish-speaking alter-ego All that lovin’ labor Calms a restless soul But all that lovin’ labor Takes twice as long alone All that lovin’ labor Calms a restless soul But all that lovin’ labor Takes its precious toll

This week, it’s my turn for the optional assignment, and I’ll stick to an open-ended topical theme: in honor of Labor Day, write about or mention the sanctity, dignity, or torture of work.
