I’ve seen it I’ve seen glory I’ve tasted from the stranger’s mouth I planned it oh I planned it all Said “Yes Sir” We said “Yes Sir” Parades and Battle signs I’d love you til the end of time Those birds have learned to fly Pack it up and away we go now Oh so far away from home Oh so far we’ve come Oh so far away from home Just stop it or just stall it Please take back everything you said We’ve landed so just end it Pick up the phone call him next time Obey it if you need it Please run in place til you recall That I said I would kill it Then praise the lord above If I could rule the world I’d Promise I’d promise If I could rule the world You’d bow down before me Follow me underground Oh so far away from home Oh so far we’ve come If I could rule the world I’d Promise I’d promise If I could rule the world You’d bow down before me This is the end Oh so far away from home Oh so far we’ve come Oh so far away from home

Blue Blue World I see people so tired and shaken Lonely hearts are forever breaking Seems to me there’s been a lot of "hating” In this blue blue world Can you see the distant fires burning Slum lord living in the Big House chirping Shadows standing in the corner lurking In this blue blue world In this blue blue world there’s a whole lot of shattered glass In this blue blue world People living underneath the overpass Oh the streets are as hot as a kitchen Another day another soul is missing Broken sidewalk needing a fixing Strangers staring each other down Devil Horns they causing a commotion Someday maybe we’re gonna see an explosion Can I bring it up to cease that notion In this blue blue world Is anybody gonna save this beautiful world I see people so tired and shaken Lonely hearts are forever breaking Seems to me there’s been a lot of "hating” In this blue blue world In this blue blue world there’s a whole lot of shattered glass In this blue blue world People looking to move so fast In this blue blue world I see the eyes of the downcast In this blue blue world People living underneath the overpass

We used to talk at the same time both tryin to be heard to tell the truth I can’t remember all the things that I said that I said I’m trying to say I’m sorry but I can’t find the right words to tell the truth I can’t remember all the things that I did the things that I did and when I finally find the path
I’m gonna walk a few things back but I can’t retrace my tracks without you there say the word and I will leave but darlin’ if you still love me to show me that you care it’s only fair that you meet me halfway I don’t wanna fight no more
I still believe that we’re worth fighting for but I don’t wanna be the only one who remembers how good it was so can you meet me halfway back to us? halfway back to love holding on for the sake of the love that we once have to tell the truth I can remember when it got so bad when it got so bad we used to have it all together now we can’t get our life back to tell the truth I can’t remember why we got so mad why we got so mad but when I finally find the path
I’m gonna walk a few things back but I can’t retrace my tracks without you there say the word and I will leave but darlin’ if you still love me to show me that you care it’s only fair that you meet me halfway I don’t wanna fight no more
I still believe that we’re worth fighting for but I don’t wanna be the only one who remembers how good it was so can you meet me halfway halfway back to love love love la di da di da and when I finally find the path
I’m gonna walk a few things back but I can’t retrace my tracks without you there say the word and I will leave but darlin’ if you still love me to show me that you care it’s only fair that you meet me halfway I don’t wanna fight no more
I still believe that we’re worth fighting for but I don’t wanna be the only one who remembers how good it was so can you meet me halfway back to us? halfway back to love love love la di da di da

Sevens my lucky number Seven is on the wall Say what’s been on your mind See how the cards will fall I’ll roll the lucky dice I’ll take my chances I’ll play for the snake eyes I’ll pay for the next dance Look in the mirror there’s a problem and you know it Look out the window take a breath and exhale Take a walk to the liquor store and promise you won’t blow it It’s a long way down, if you want to bail Falling apart, falling apart Falling into a deeper hole Falling apart

you’re looking at a used car at the end of a cul de sac the canary yellow body shows a little rust but could fit all of your things in the back shaded by a wall of kudzu you hear some kids playing down the street while you listen to a man talking with his hands saying “take all the time you need” so go ahead, kick the tires, won’t you have a look at what’s under the hood then drive around the block with the stereo blasting and see if it makes you feel good cause you know that it’s gotta feel good you’re considering a new job twelve hours north in Baltimore it pays a little better and you’re ready for a change but it’s hard to walk out the door and leave your little home in Macon where your friends live down the street so you listen for a sign in the song on the radio to tell you where you’re supposed to be the cool night air excites your skin as your canary flies down 129 while Tom Petty sings about free falling and if feels like it’s gonna work out fine yeah it feels right and you know that it’s gotta feel right

Butterflies & beatdowns Might get you where you want to be Long drives through small towns You don't need to see to be seen I just want to be here next week Tambourines & tailgates Will shake up your day to day Ripped jeans when the night gets late And you've run out of things to say You're just trying to fill the page Orchestrations & open tunings Could make for a really nice sound Explorations inside the ruins Could unearth some untainted ground I'm just trying to stick around

I am going out the window Try to find my mind It was light and weighed a ton so It got left behind Have one on the rocks from planet paradox We want silence mid the millions Zen within a zoo It may lie right in between The rainbow and the Dew Have one on the rocks from planet paradox I am going out the window Try to find my mind It was light and weighed a ton so It got left behind I’m calling you’re calling We’re calling me you Snow falling fireballing Time mauling you too

What are you waiting for The moonlight exhaust Thin film interference Reflecting off the floor A loud life lived abides Eclipsing upstage wings Moving along the tide And crashing on the shore Controls set for the hard hearts of the lost Making our way back home We don’t give a damn what it costs Setting aside all sense And the few hopes that ain’t been tossed Reaching out for the last The city sleeps tonight Fly your rags at half mast ‘Fore it all goes to shite Window pane cut the feed We lost the signal flow Iridesce on stones Forgetting what you know Tear drops crystalline Burn scratches on the door Call in the calvalries On Marcel Duchamp’s phone Controls set for the hard hearts of the lost Making our way back home We don’t give a damn what it costs Setting aside all sense And the few hopes that ain’t been tossed Reaching out for the last The city sleeps tonight Fly your rags at half mast ‘Fore it all goes to shite

she came from down the county line with a suitcase full of sorry she seemed to think the lights downtown were the perfect place to hide she must’ve stared right through me with her eyes all ice and starry lord, I tried, how I tried she told of summer golden dreams with the serpent in the garden brandy wine and cigarettes as the quarry turned to dusk and sometimes her voice would trail away and I could feel her memories harden just a husk, just a husk careful you pull up your roots in the sun careful don’t cast them away caught in between what you spin and what’s spun you followed the wandering star through the deepest of blue always the wild waves for you maybe I thought I’d found a place but the days kept getting longer I used to catch her staring south through the window, late at night I’d clench a fist at every man her pain told me had wronged her but she won’t fight, she won’t fight careful you pull up your roots in the sun careful don’t cast them away caught in between what you spin and what’s spun you followed the wandering star through the deepest of blue always the wild waves for you these days I’m mostly drifting now got a note the other night said she was back at home and lost as best as you’d expect she said “I can’t live in the shadows but I keep running from the light” that won’t reflect, won’t reflect careful you pull up your roots in the sun careful don’t cast them away caught in between what you spin and what’s spun you followed the wandering star through the deepest of blue always the wild waves for you

about

Kristy Jackson’s assignment for the week is an interesting structural challenge:

"I think we’re all familiar with typical song structures, AABA or ABAB for example. I want you to write a song with that has two choruses. You can choose any style.”

Anyone’s who’s been paying much attention to contemporary pop songwriting (and I know that you are all Billie Eilish fans …) knows that these double/multiple chorus styles are becoming ubiquitous these days. Post-chorus, pre-chorus, vocal hooks … all these techniques all leave me scratching my head trying to figure out which part is the chorus. Well, that’s the point - it’s ALL the chorus, these days. All killer, no filler.
