about

I've been happily writing "small songs" for much of this round, but this assignment begged for something a little more epic. I've been really enjoying the occasional effort to write in longer forms, and that's the direction I headed this time. Unfortunately, I didn't have nearly enough time to pull off something like this this week, so much of the composition and performance here is last-minute.

Lyrically, I began with the stories floating around in the news lately about people volunteering for manned missions to Mars. That's a topic with plenty of poignancy to begin with, but then I hinted at the good ol' sci-fi trope of long-distance space travelers warping the space-time continuum, and returning from a 20-year journey hundreds of years in "Earth time" in the future. Nothing new here, but for some reason, even though I'm not a huge sci-fi or fantasy fan, I'm a big sucker for time-travel and time-warp stories.

Once again, I was conscious of the concept of lyrical traveling, which Mitchell and I have discussed quite a bit lately. Not literal travel, but the idea of covering a great deal of narrative and emotional space mapped across a lyric, with an eye towards economy.

Lastly, I'll point out that this is the first time this round that I have failed to spare you from my drumming. Sorry. Oh, and this is the second MM3AM song in a row from me to feature the Waterstone Meaden bass.

lyrics

I
I was nineteen when I joined the mission
how could I know I'd meet someone
I wanted to do something with my life
make a mark on this world, something to show

they'll ship me out soon, there's little to do
I've closed accounts, said my goodbyes
when you look in the night sky I hope you'll recall
the touch of my hand, the gentlest of lies

I've run so far
I've run so far

II
the traffic's backed up down on 40 this morning
down by what used to be the Hawthorne Curve
they took out a block and straightened it out
long before I lost the nerve

we used to go shoot pool down cross from the lesbian bar
that seemed so long ago
sometimes thinking about way back then almost feels like
telling stories about someone I used to know

and it's colder than expected today
and so long until the night

III
a minute in my eyes is a
thousand years to you
and when I come back home
the seasons will run new
for you, my love, the time is lost
the passage has been closed
for me, the empty years begin
this chapter that I chose
