The prompt caused me to realize I don't have a strong sense of what constitutes a side 2 opener. Before streaming I lived in the age of CDs. The were a few LPs and cassettes back at the very beginning of my listening history but even so I'm not super aware of the significance of that spot. So I decided to refer to the great run of 4 masterpiece records that Stevie Wonder released in the early 70s. I started listening to all four of these albums on vinyl in high school, and I've kept listening through CD and streaming phases. Superstition, You Ain't Done Nothing, Higher Ground, I Wish. All hits except for You Ain't Done Nothin. All bluesy riff based jams. Mostly political lyrics, calling for social justice and calling out inequality and greed, with I Wish as the exception. I dialed in a good synth clave and tried to knock out something in that vein but I did not succeed. I did manage to come up with this one today, resorting to the old model of taking whatever is available.
lyrics
All of my planning
And my fool’s gold panning
While I’m waiting for my ship to come in
All of my dreaming
And my midnight scheming
While I’m waiting for it all to begin
Tired of being stuck in my head
Waiting for a green light but I just see red
All I’m asking for is a place to stay
Maybe for a night or just a couple days
I’ve gotta get away
I’ve gotta get away
All I’m looking for is a place to go
Where I can push it all aside or watch it unfold
Either way, either way
White flag flying
While I’m secretly denying
That I’ll never see your face again
There’s a lot to unpack
I want to take it all back
I understand I’m never gonna win
Tired of being stuck in these blues
I’m waiting for a new light but I just see you
