about

I wrote this yesterday evening and in my haste to strike while the iron was hot, I tracked quick and dirty, vox and git at the same time into one mic. When I got up this morning, I figured that it deserved a little better than that, so I redid it. I'm still not settled on this key and it will likely go up a half step or so.
If you heard the other one that was posted for a few hours yesterday, I ask that you listen again and re-judge the song based on this version. I also ask our gracious moderator to please pass that bit of information along as well.
I think it's a decent tune. It's not as good as my other one this week, but any week I can write two songs, neither of which I hate, is a pretty decent week I reckon.
I thought the line, "Are these miseries a-hounding me
Or do I leave them in my wake?" works in a sorta interesting way, in that it could mean either:
The narrator is wondering whether he is cursed by hardship and sadness or if it is his own actions that cause the hardship and sadness
Or
It could mean that the narrator is plagued by nightmarish images and he's wondering if those nightmares will manifest in the waking world or depart when the dream ends.
I'm pretty proud of the cleverness of that.

lyrics

I
Last night I dreamt a vision
Too terrible to say
What I saw
I will not say

I awoke to sullen darkness
Where I wept ’til break of day
Lo, I cried
’Til light of day

These troubles they’re surrounding me
It’s more than I can take
Are these miseries a-hounding me
Or do I leave them in my wake?

II
Up through my morning window
Rising pure and sweet
Come sailing in
So pure and sweet

A smooth and steady psalm
With which no heartache could compete
No my tears
Could not compete

These troubles they’re surrounding me
It’s more than I can take
Are these miseries a-hounding me
Or do I leave them in my wake?

III
O’ bird slip in my window
Alight on my right knee
Share a song
With lonesome me

And when you fly away
Take my sorrows ‘long with thee
Cast them off
Into the sea

When you fly away
Take my sorrows ‘long with thee
Cast them off
Into that cold and bitter sea
