I put some thought into the idea of a muse. What is it that inspires me, that makes me want to write? And the bottom-line scenario is that it's that rare joy, the immense satisfaction that comes along once in a blue moon from writing a really good song, something that both moves me and that might resonate with listeners. So, the fickle lover in the song is just the personification of that elusive joy.
lyrics
There was an hour
The world was dark I need no lantern I need no spark
The bliss of darkness
All mine alone
I could have lived there
I could have grown
You know you never
Should have turned
Showed your face here
You should’ve learned
I couldn’t help it
So true to form
I burn inside me
but can’t get warm
All the same
I think I’ll go
But I’ll be back here
I know you know
I’ve got nobody
but me to blame
Can’t give you up it’s a loser’s game
But all the same
I sing the blessed
Good fortune’s fools
The ones who never
Were shown the jewels
Who wished on stars
In lesser skies
who never glimpsed you the glimmering prize
You let me hold you
a moment’s play
For you, a mercy
I’ve lost my way
I’ll sleep no more
These dreams of rain
I swear I held you
Yet once again
All the same
I think I’ll go
But I’ll be back here
I know you know
I’ve got nobody
but me to blame
Can’t give you up it’s a loser’s game
But all the same
