As I said before:
In a twist no one saw coming, I find myself this week in a race with Patrick and Doug for the busy crown. Who'd a thunk it? Not me, but it's true. I have so many damn activities this week that I can hardly believe it. Between teaching guitar lessons, taking piano lessons, attending Blue Jays games, going to see Mavis Staples tomorrow, general house work/ life stuff, and taking a friggin' cross-Canada trip this weekend with my wife for her mother's surprise birthday party in Vancouver (my first trip to the Pacific!), I had only today to pull something together. OK, Doug and Patrick are probably still busier than me, but to be fair, they work a lot faster than I do.
Normally, I'll juggle two or three songs for a few days before picking the strongest contender on Wednesday or Thursday and concentrating on getting the one as best I can, but since my I'm suddenly all busy, I don't have time to do that this week. So, instead of turning in one fully realized song (though I admit, last weeks was pretty half-baked), I'm turning in both of the songs I'm juggling this week and neither of 'em are fully developed. Both of 'em are just git, vox, and drums. I wrote this one and the other one on the street car on my way to a baseball game.
As to this song:
Q: Did I actually do a blues song and say something about, "Woke up in the morning?"
A: All I can say is one man's cliche is another man's tradition.
I'm off to drink my weight in Throat-coat.
lyrics
I
Oh Lord
Will help me through another day?
Well, I woke up this morning
Couldn’t hardly raise my head
I won’t have to face no trouble
If I just lay here in the bed
I don’t want to meet the struggle
But I rise up anyway
You got to help me through another day
Oh Lord
You got to help me through another day
II
Last night I’m drinking and gambling
And I'm having such a time
You should’ve seen them pretty womens
Every one of ‘em was mine
I was riding big and high
Then I up and lost all my pay
Ya got to help though another day
Oh Lord
You got to help me through another day
III
Well, I know that I’m a sinner
And I know that I done wrong
But I swear that I’ll be better
If you’ll just help me along
Yeah, I'll be a changing soon
Could be tomorrow
Who's to say?
But I got to make it through another day
