I was relatively happy with the music on this one again but wanted to spend time with the lyrics. Again, I never did have that breakthrough I needed, but I did tighten up a few lines. Wrote some extra verses, but they didn't do anything to bring depth to the story, and they weren't particularly clever or interesting. Based on Joshua West's suggestion, I did change the cadence of the hook line, and with it, the lyrics and the title of the song. I think the cadence is better, though I never did come up with the slam-dunk hook lyric I was hoping for. Still, relatively happy with it - it's not a great song, but it might be fun to play live. Oh, and arrangement-wise, I played it this week on a Stonesy G-tuned acoustic guitar, for a change.
lyrics
So how does it feel
To be everyone's best friend
As long as you still
Got a dollar left to spend
A shoulder to cry on
Just a face without a name
A stone they can step on
Someone innocent to blame
Your brother's been broke
Ever since he learned to count
Spends it on smoke
And his offsite track account
You loaned him your watch
Now you never have the time
He drank all your scotch
Now he's here for your last dime
ç
Your daddy's a brute
Don't think he ever gave a damn
Your momma's been drunk
Since he came home from Vietnam
And all you can say
Is you must have got it wrong
You think it's okay
Cause it's been this way so long
So call me some day
When you're standing on your own
I'm leaving this town
I can't stand to see you owned
I'll stare at the waves
Off the bridge down 7th street
And think who you've saved
From your broke down mercy seat
√So how does it feel
To be everyone's best friend
As long as you still
Got a dollar left to spend
A shoulder to cry on
Just a face without a name
A stone they can step on
Someone innocent to blame
Your brother's been broke
Ever since he learned to count
Spends it on smoke
And his offsite track account
You loaned him your watch
Now you never have the time
He drank all your scotch
Now he's here for your last dime
No one gets to tell you
It's a hard way to be
You're heading for a heartache
If you're counting on me
You got time for every loser
In your family tree
You can keep your name
I'm going back where I came
Your daddy's a brute
Don't think he ever gave damn
Your momma's been drunk
Since he came home from Vietnam
And all you can say
Is you must have got it wrong
You think it's okay
Cause it's been this way so long
So call me some day
When you're standing on your own
I'm leaving this town
I can't stand to see you owned
I'll stare at the waves
Off the bridge down 7th street
And think who you've saved
From your broke down mercy seat
No one gets to tell you
It's a hard way to be
You're heading for a heartache
If you're counting on me
You got time for every loser
In your family tree
You can keep your name
I'm going back where I came
