I haven't read the Henry James story in a very long time, but it has always stayed with me. So this is inspired -kinda sorta- by that tale.
lyrics
I get up every morning
I keep my head down while at work
Down a glass or two in the evening
Just enough to cover up the hurt
I don't take too many chances
I’ll wait for fortune to ignite
While the city schemes and dances
I stand frozen staring at the bright lights
If I can't break out of this shell
The beast in the jungle's gonna get me
He's gonna get me
It's getting harder to tell
If I'm headed for heaven or for hell
I'm still waiting for that hidden pearl
The kind they promised would be mine
But this oyster is a brave new world
Now I'm wondering if I've been blind
If I can't break out of this shell
The beast in the jungle's gonna get me
He's gonna get me
It's getting harder to tell
If I’m headed for heaven or for hell
Waiting, wondering
When will I get my chance
Waiting, wondering
Lost in a shadow dance
Waiting, wondering
Was it always up to me?
If I can't break out of this shell
The beast in the jungle's gonna get me
He's gonna get me
A wasted life is a cell
And I'm headed for the jungle
If I can't break out of this shell
The beast in the jungle's gonna get me
He's gonna get me
It's getting harder to tell
If I'm headed for heaven or for hell
