Definitely feeling a slight return to form this round. No home runs yet, but a couple of tunes that might be usable. I might even try this one out with the Solid Citizens.
I'm a big fan of those suspenseful narrative tunes that have puzzle characteristics - did he or didn't he? Wait; what exactly happened here? Every once in a while, I'll try to follow that formula and concoct a narrative that might work. This is definitely a first draft and could use more passes, but I think this one just about does what I want it to do.
lyrics
you shoulda walked, not run
set your phase to stun
first time he set eyes on you
I should've made you pay
but I just looked the other way
jealous makes a poison brew
now they're fanning out in teams
and I keep having strange, strange dreams
of eagles wings that fly into the sun
and when the tale gets told
and the papers all been sold
just might want to find your daddy's gun
and any fool here coulda told you
that you were waiting on thin air
but all the fools round here were busy
trying to get their fingers in your hair
and me, I guess I shoulda seen it
coiling like a snake
but I set myself up busy
down at the bottom of the lake
so you sank your claws skin-deep
but what you bought, it wasn't cheap
did you think you had it under control?
some monsters can't be tamed
some tamers can't be named
should've seen I'm yours, heart and soul
you don't need to know the truth
can't help with your sweet tooth
but you might Not be seeing me for awhile
no matter what you think you hear
you gotta promise me, my dear
keep your distance from the quarter mile
and any fool here coulda told you
that you were waiting on thin air
but all the fools round here were busy
trying to get their fingers in your hair
and me, I guess I shoulda seen it
coiling like a snake
but I set myself up busy
down at the bottom of the lake
