about

This was a tough one for me. There's not a whole lot from my parents' music collection that has weathered the test of time in my little canon of musical appreciation. I do recall that the Kingston Trio and John Denver were both prominently represented in my house, growing up, and I started out going in that direction. When speaking to my Dad this week, though, he kept insisting that he loved the Louis Prima/Keely Smith duets, something I have absolutely no memory of, but Dad's standing by it. There was definitely also a lot of Perry Como. I thought it would be fun to write something for Molly and I to duet on, and I think it came out somewhere between those influences. It was certainly fun to do! Wish I'd had time to get a trumpet player in, though.

Special kudos to poor Molly, who was really thrown into the fire on this one. "Can you please learn and record this somewhat difficult, jazzy tune with weird melodies and phrasing that I finished writing a few minutes ago? We have about half an hour. Oh, and it's WAY below your comfortable range …" She was a trooper.

Oh, I should also point out that after having to hear so many of my thoroughly fictional songs about infidelity and temptation, I was happy to give M the satisfaction of playing my temptress in this one.

lyrics

I was a happy man 'til you came along
You just didn't know what you were missing
Oh, heaven help me if loving you is wrong
You talk so much, boy, when we should kissing

You don't know the mess i'm in
Just shut up and open the door let me in
You're gonna have me break my best girl's heart
You know I'm the girl for the part

If you don't think you've got my heartstrings strummin'
You've got another thing coming
And if you think this love is quite contagious
Our love is built for the ages

I don't know what to do with your tender heart
Just put your arms around me, that's a start
Oh i'm so scared To take this crazy chance
Oh baby what's wrong with one more dance

You don't know the mess i'm in
Just shut up and open the door let me in
You're gonna have me break my best girl's heart
You know I'm the girl for the part

If you don't think you've got my heartstrings strummin'
You've got another thing coming
And if you think this love is quite contagious
Our love is built for the ages
