about

The idea to write cross-gender led me to work on something else for a potential Molly/Doug song. And I even got Molly to sing it! The vocal here is more less the first time she ever actually sang it. That gal's getting the hang of this!

The lyric was based on the idea - as was affirmed to me by members of the "fairer" sex - that much has been made of the ways in which men suppress women and cultivate a culture of casual cruelty, but less has been made of the way that women often cut each other down and fail to support each other in times of need. The narrative I was working on was based on the idea that the protagonist is frustrated that another woman - a rival, perhaps, in some way? - spurned her attempts to reach out and establish mutual support. But I've been reading Hardy, as I always do this time of year, so things go south, and it's possible that in the end, the narrator finally turns on the other woman, in turn.

lyrics

Tried to speak her
eyes a no-man’s land
tried to reach out
her hand’s a flaming brand
I cleared a path
gave up my broken crown
but she burned my bridges down

I seen her step a-
cross the open field
ran to meet her
open arms to heal
turned away, crossed
three miles out around
And she burned my bridges down

Burned my bridges down
in strength, we should be bound
the boot heel strikes its mark
in bitter dark
the harder from a softer heart

Don’t make no sense
the way she cuts at me
Both knocked down and
both been left to bleed
share the same mark
but no one makes a sound
she burned my bridges down

Burned my bridges down
in strength, we should be bound
the boot heel strikes its mark
in bitter dark
the harder from a softer heart

River rage to
take back what she gave
reach your hand out
pray for me to save
icy fingers
I wouldn’t let you drown …
but you burned your bridges down

Burned my bridges down
in strength, we should be bound
the boot heel strikes its mark
in bitter dark
the harder from a softer heart
