Anand and I have been threatening to work on another Kingfly album at some point, and I've tried to sit down and write for it for quite awhile, and nothing's made the cut so far. So I decided I'd use this week's challenge to try to write a "single" for Kingfly. This definitely landed a little closer to, say, Coldplay, territory than I'm comfortable with, but it's certainly in the ballpark of what I've wanted to work on for KF.
However … I would say that these might be the worst lyrics I've ever written, but I'm not sure they even qualify as lyrics. I didn't spend nearly enough time on them and had to go with what I had. Which is a shame, because this contest ought to be much more about the lyrics than about the production, but honestly, I think I kept working on the production to avoid dealing with my lack of lyrical inspiration. I had the title and the first two lines, which I thought were fairly evocative, but they ended up evoking … nothing. Not this week, anyway. If this tune makes the cut for KF, I'll definitely be bunkering down and rewriting them ...
lyrics
she used to be a shy girl
she don't have that luxury
she left a junior-high world
for dangerous company
she wants to float above it
oh oh up above the snakes and lies
she wants to get down in it
she wants to feel the loser's prize
if you can win it and win it alone
leave it behind and let me go
win it and win it alone
I swear you won't be sorry
save my life
keeping your wolves at bay
break your pride
chasing the night into day
chasing the night into day
seems so long ago now
she could barely look me in the eye
kept waiting for a moment
but it was hard to tell whose tongue was tied
now she's made her comeback
five hundred miles away
don't know where she found it
the strength to find the light of day
if you can win it and win it alone
leave it behind and let me go
win it and win it alone
I swear you won't be sorry
save my life
keeping your wolves at bay
break your pride
chasing the night into day
chasing the night into day
