trying to write something different for me...and from a fictional character's viewpoint.

So to keep it in the assignment, but take on a fictional viewpoint, I asked
What would someone who had not followed a straight path for 48 years think about a New Year's resolution...

could have told myself a thousand lies
'bout the things that I will change
the way that I could hold you up
and make it new again
could have said a couple words
just to make it all work out
but instead I face these barren walls
and a future filled with doubt

                no new year's gonna change the way
                the way that I have lived
                a new face is a mask
                and yeah, we know they wear thin
                no new year's gonna make up for
        the things that fill my past
                but at least a new year's further from the pain
                and closer to my last...

so many things so many times
I could have chose a different path
the road that was less traveled or
or the line drawn on your map
I could have reached up to the sky
and maybe fallen on bended knee
but instead I chose the easy way
there's only one way left for me

  no new year's gonna change the way
