I think I did what I set out to do on this one. I'm a big fan of After the Gold Rush, and I wanted to honor the assignment without creating an out-and-out pastiche.
lyrics
You were staring at the eye of a hurricane
Through a window pane
Etched in frost lines
You were trying to remember your lover’s name
Just a candle’s flame
For the lost times
she said “Don’t you leave the Fool for the world
Don’t you leave the Hanged Man to dry”
Never leave your pennants unfurled
Never let your love lanterns die
I’ve never danced down by the river
But I have kissed you in falling snow
So I will feel no parting sorrow
When it comes my time to go
I could see the growing gathering of multitudes
All the myths and moods
Come together
I could feel the weight of wonder, the
Vanished hearts
Fits and starts as light as a feather
she said “Don’t you leave the Fool for the world
Don’t you leave the Hanged Man to dry”
Never leave your pennants unfurled
Never let your love lanterns die
I’ve never danced down by the river
But I have kissed you in falling snow
So I will feel no parting sorrow
When it comes my time to go
