about

Every week I make the mistake of spending far too much time (but never enough) on half-hearted "production," and not nearly enough time on lyrics. This week, I made a concerted effort to do it right, even though I didn't come up with a single idea I liked until 5:48 this morning, right as I was getting off the exit ramp from my gig in DC last night. This lyric will need more drafting, but I like the foundation, which is not necessarily something I can say about many of my MM3AM songs in a long time. The flip side, of course, is that the one-take/one-overdub demo is raw and fairly awful, but I finally might have a song I can use. Might make a nice SolCits tune, but I could also hear Les sing this for MBG. Have to think about that ...

lyrics

Carrie gets up earlier than
Everybody else, puts on her
Grandmother's pearls and cries herself to wake up while the
Coffee's cooling down and the paper's piling up
And the eggs just taste like sand

Carrie takes the seventeen steps up to the street
You'd miss the tremble if you hadn't seen it happen before
and every day she half-expects
security guards to send her home again

What if you could bend the world to your will?
Put your hands right inside the till
And walk out, laughing

And every night I dream
I'm swimming hard upstream
And I wonder how I'm ever gonna make her mine again
Dancing in the head of a pin

She buys it cheap even though she could afford something better
A new dress in the closet but she wears that same old sweater
Looked so good back in college
When the boys started noticing her face

And when she comes back home to me, sometimes makes me even wonder if she sees through the fog
Or am I like a memory sleeping next to her dreams as she
Lies awake every night, all night

What if you could bend the world to yr will?
Put your hands right inside of the till
always walk out, laughing

And every night I dream
I'm swimming hard upstream
And I wonder how I'm ever gonna make her mine again
Dancing in the head of a pin

started in the sun and now she don't know who she should fight
Started panoramic, came down to a pinhole of light

And every night I dream
I'm swimming hard upstream
And I wonder how I'm ever gonna make her mine again
Dancing in the head of a pin
