Clearly this song did not end up deep in Johnny territory, but I think it's easy to see how it started there. All in all, it's a bit Doug-by-numbers, or at least, a certain kind of Doug-by-numbers, and the whole thing was written in 45 minutes, but I kinda like it, anyway. Very stripped down demo, and I even left the studio door open for some crickets and fireflies to make cameos. Oh, and while I was recording it, a conversation with Jordan Lee led me to cram in the word "hidebound," at the last possible second. So there.
lyrics
I stumble through the alley
With the knife already drawn
Some days you can feel the spirit move
The words I still remember
From the speech she never gave
You’ll always have your lover’s need to prove
I could smell the sweet temptation
I could hear the whispers swell
Some nights were made for broken chains
In the early winds of autumn
In the creaking of the swing
I can feel it in my bones each time it rains
I’ve lived through more regret
Than I have ever shown
But these are darker days
Than I have ever known
She’s the bringer of the blessings
She’s the keeper of the crown
But I can’t stop this pounding in my skull
The years gone by, I can’t recall
The faces I have seen
A man can’t carve his mark with knives so dull
She told me once she’d found it
She’d send a signal flare
And sometimes in the evening I’ll keep watch
I count the breaths I waste
The hidebound stars I’ve crossed
The prisoner strains to draw his daily notch
I’ve lived through more regret
Than I have ever shown
But these are darker days
Than I have ever known
