Had a real hard time with this one, at first, which is to be expected, because the challenge came about as a result of my having a hard time writing a new upbeat Solid Citizens track. I've had a mental block on this for quite a while. I wrote a whole bunch of snippets this week, and some were promising, I thought, but none sounded like even believable tangents for the Citizens. I had a breakthrough, though, when I heard one of my favorite Of Monsters and Men song twice in one day. That gave me a rhythm/tempo/vibe that I thought I could work with, and I built from there.
This is a bit of a mess, lyrically - this is the half-digested result of two or three different primary approaches never being resolved, really. One of them, which I didn't really follow through on but might at a later time, is a brutally difficult challenge, and one that might make for a good MM3AM challenge in the future: to write something direct and unflinching that would express what you'd like to say to a loved one, to be played after your own passing. I know, right? Chew on that one for a bit.
In any case, I'm really happy with the music for this one. Four or five more lyric passes, and I might just have something here!
lyrics
Once upon a scheme
A foolish man had dreams
Waiting for the sky to fall
His heart was incomplete
But underneath his feet
The earth was quaking after all
Far and wide
Cold hands pried
Well before he'd yield the prize
He searched the kingdoms wide
Dispatched his scouts and sighed
"Where oh where will I find grace?"
In the castle right next door
The girl from the record store
Was taking off her poker face
Don't you know
Love may grow
But only where you plant it
Drink every drop of this lifetime's supply
Don't wait for love's seas to part
Always remember I'm right by your side
Keep me inside of your heart
He told her of his quest
The hunt at his behest
At happy hour, o'er pints of mead
This maid made moony eyes
Fool failed to realize
Earth was shaking underneath his feet
Drink every drop of this lifetime's supply
Don't wait for love's seas to part
Always remember I'm right by your side
Keep me inside of your heart
Ere this fool should wake
No poison potions take
Rarer magic he should find
Her kindness in a kiss
For faith his folly'd missed
For love the room to grow in kind
Drink every drop of this lifetime's supply
Don't wait for love's seas to part
Always remember I'm right by your side
Keep me inside of your heart
