Well, this is an odd one. Not quite sure how we got there, but it's an overblown piece of weird noir Brit-rock, equal parts early King Crimson, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Michael Ondaatje.
My random Wiki-page inspiration was a story about Francisco Filho, a soccer player, coach, and talent developer. What I thought was interesting about his story was that, professionally, he had found work all across the globe throughout his career, but after retiring, he was coaxed to accept a position in Mauritius - truly at the ends of the earth - and then fired a year later. I just thought it was poignant that he ended his fairly illustrious career so unceremoniously, in such a remote and "lost" location.
lyrics
My father fought back the surge
Bells of Sao Paolo rang the requiem dirge
I left my home like cannonshot
I chased my dragons, sought no rest, nil for naught
Man lay roots all
eternal in gold
As the sea’s lost foam
Man is fooled
These shiftings of sand
Searching for his home
You brought me to the end
The edge of nowhere
My devils show their
Unbeatable hands
You left me here to find
The edge of never
The lost forever
The glass-empty sands
I’ve bathed in Venezuelan rain
My bed of stars laid down in sweet Clairefontaine
I raised good men to victories bold
From Porto silver to the Manchester gold
Man lay roots all
eternal in gold
As the sea’s lost foam
Man is fooled
These shiftings of sand
Searching for his home
You brought me to the end
The edge of nowhere
My devils show their
Unbeatable hands
You left me here to find
The edge of never
The lost forever
The glass-empty sands
