Man, this was a tough one! Turns out, as a songwriter, I don't traffic in "truth" very often. Certainly not the big Bono truths. So this is what I came up with. Bitter? Negative? Nah. I prefer to believe that we're all base, self-driven creatures that have the ability to rise above ourselves. You folks that believe in the basic decency of people must be continually disappointed!
lyrics
everybody sucks, yes it's true
til they make up their minds
not to suck for a minute or two
but you could be a little better
such an epic trendsetter sanctified, just decide
not to suck, not to suck
somebody said that it's nature
that we are born to be goodly creatures
he must be living in a bubble
give a man an inch he'll take a mile
give a man a frown he'll steal your smile
everybody sucks, yes it's true
til they make up their minds
not to suck for a minute or two
but you could be a little better
such an epic trendsetter sanctified, just decide
not to suck, not to suck
you can't make it on your own steam
it takes a village or a football team
so quit your sobbing 'bout your own woes
there's seven billion here, god knows
we aren't all smelling like a rose
everybody sucks, yes it's true
til they make up their minds
not to suck for a minute or two
but you could be a little better
such an epic trendsetter sanctified, just decide
not to suck, not to suck
so, in conclusion, take the long view:
you come up short in nearly everything you do
a little grace goes a long way
send your SOS ship to shore
or set yourself adrift forevermore
