The shutters are drawn 
for sale on the lawn
And next door’s been condemned

Half of the cliff and the house with it 
Fell into the waves below 
Couldn’t have been that long ago

Weeds are tall and the wind is high
Wood creaks its lonesome cry
Open doors like open arms
waved goodbye in silence
resonating regretful sighs

Around another bend or two,
Big Sur beckons its isolated song
A getaway for words
their tormentors’ rights and wrongs

For all things sacred and good
Divine enlightenment
To the shallow shrouded hood
Covered shadows of discontent 

That open up their cases on Ashbury and Haight 
The dark, ugly cauldron at the end of the rainbow
Succumb to the damning of ideologies 
Time’s slow, steady nailing of the coffin

Hold what you wish that’s precious and good
With all of your heart for as long as you can
Gravity will pull like the clock always turns 
Until it holds the last grain of sand
