I started to write this song to my son around midnight on Monday morning. The main hook came quickly; a sentiment I have almost every week when I try to write a song at the last minute. For the rest, I tried to summarize some highlights of what I hope to teach him.
I think some of the lyrics could improve and I think it would be fun to play around with some embellished melodic lines. Other than that, maybe it's a keeper, pun intended. Ba Dum Pssh. Dad jokes.
lyrics
Every day you wake up
Be the very best that you can
Be nice, be kind, always meet the eyes
With a firm shake of your hand
Before you go off judging
Try to put yourself into their shoes
Lead by example
Even when it’s hard to do
Be anything that you want to be
But remember you’re going to fall
Over and over and over and over again
It’s ok to dream and it’s ok to wish
Keep your line in the water
If you’re ever gonna catch a fish
Money won’t buy you happiness
Set straight your priorities
Every thing will cost you time
But the best things in life are free
Patience is a virtue
Idle hands can have a busy mind
So wait your turn get what you earn
Even if you’re at the back of the line
Admit when you don’t know
‘Cause otherwise you never will
Make peace with your past and always learn from your mistakes
It’s ok to dream and it’s ok to wish
Keep your line in the water
If you’re ever gonna catch a fish
Don’t let yourself get in your way
The sky’s the limit if you can maintain
Follow your heart but use your mind
So the former won’t keep you in a bind
Over and over and over and over again
It’s ok to dream and it’s ok to wish
Keep your line in the water
If you’re ever gonna catch a fish
