Boy, did this come at the 11th hour. Been a busy week, with my little girl being sick, and all the other usual stuff. But most importantly, I just did NOT find that spark of inspiration. The straight up love song is always a tough one. I had a few sparks of inspiration early in the week, but they never led anywhere promising. Finally, I just started working on a track last night (Saturday). And it was terrible. Some awful abomination of Mellencamp-meets-Coldplay. I finished the track, retired for a late-night nightcap, and flipped on a few minutes of Leon Bridges on Austin City Limits. And after about a song and a half, I picked up my guitar (at 2am) and wrote the bulk of this in 5 minutes.
Which once again reinforces my conviction that sometimes you've just got to sit down and get to work and write some awful stuff to unblock the creative pipes, before you can get to the good stuff.
Did the track quickly. Didn't labor over the lyrics; not yet, anyway. "Giving Up on Giving Up" was one of those titles that I figure must have been used a thousand times, but after a little searching, I failed to turn up a single variation of the phrase that had any notoriety at all. So, I'll take it! Definitely hope to spend some time on the lyrics next week. Might just make a nice Mystery Dates tune.
lyrics
you and me, girl
like west and east
we go together like the
beauty and the beast
I've tried to leave you
you should have gone
I acted every bit
the man you settled on
we got no business being lovers
but when you touch me I go
out of my mind
yeah I give up
I’m giving up on giving up
my heart is open and I
need you ever more
yeah I give up
I’m giving up on giving up
I can’t remember what I
started fighting for
