I wanted another uptempo performance track for either the Solid Citizens or MBG, and I've still been listening to a lot of Tom Petty after reading his new bio. This one's pretty unapologetically TP-ish. It's also fairly cliched, but I think that's forgivable if I can come up with some lyrics I'm proud of - the point is to give one of those bands something meaty that they can lay into a bit live.
Lyrically, I wanted to head in a David Lowery direction and people the song with screwups and losers, and hopefully maintain a sense of pathos while tossing off some acerbic one-liners. I think I found a good story, but I haven't honed in on the tone (or the one-liners) yet. Hopefully, I can improve that this week.
lyrics
Your brother's been broke
Ever since he learned to count
Spends it on smoke
And his offsite track account
You loaned him your watch
Now you never have the time
He drank all your scotch
Now he's here for your last dime
Your daddy's a brute
Like he never gave damn
Your momma's been drunk
Since he came home from Vietnam
And all you can say
Is you must've done something wrong
You think it's okay
Cause you've lived in fear so long
No one gets to tell you
It's a hard way to be
You're heading for a heartache
If you're counting on me
You got time for every loser
In your family tree
Got no time for me
I'm going back to St. Marie
So how does it feel
To be everyone's best friend
As long as you still
Got a dollar left to spend
A shoulder to cry on
Just a face without a name
A stone they can step on
Someone innocent to blame
So call me some day
When you learn how to stand on yr own
I'm going away
Where my troubles sink like stones
I'll stare at the waves
Off the bridge down 7th street
And think who you've saved
From your broke down mercy seat
No one gets to tell you
It's a hard way to be
You're heading for a heartache
If you're counting on me
You got time for every loser
In your family tree
Got no time for me
I'm going back to St. Marie
