Continuing my trek through Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man Is Hard To Find collection, this one is inspired by "A Stroke of Good Fortune." Apparently, it's one of her least favorite stories in her collection, and it does seem a little slight, and I felt the disconnect in trying to write this song. Still, I think I can live with this for a first draft.
lyrics
Ruby, oh my dear
You ain’t like everyone
You know where you come from
And why you’ve gone
Ruby, don’t you know
You’re made for better things
No bibs or apron strings
drag you down
No, no
They’ll never bring you low
Just one more stair to go
Say good fortune
baby
Ruby, don’t you fade
You’ll never be that fool
skipping rocks with jewels
all greyed and sour
Ruby, climb those stairs
are your fingers feeling numb?
does your heart beat like a drum?
Must be painful
No, no
They’ll never bring you low
Just one more stair to go
Say good fortune
baby
Oh, Ruby, did you slip?
You wouldn’t be the first
the fortune teller’s curse
is what you make it
Ruby, odds are stacked
oh, can you dance with doom?
can you make a little room
For someone else?
No, no
They’ll never bring you low
Just one more stair to go
Say good fortune
baby
