My muse hasn't been a person for a long time. After giving it quite a bit of thought most of my songs can be boiled down to either the presence or absence of hope. So, that's what I wrote a song about. Also, this is my coronavirus voice. For once I didn't even have to work for the Tom Waits wannabe tones! Musically, yeah, I wanted to add more to this track, but frankly...it's been a rough week, so I kept it super simple. The three chord cyclical thing works for the concept of the lyric, so I didn't force it. And hey, a Kurt Vonnegut reference! Ain't my art so smart and totally not derivative?!
lyrics
In her absence
I repose
Through bleak midwinter’s
Jarring notes;
Say nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
Do nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
When sleepless silence
Burns away
Cozy blanket’s
Warm embrace;
Say nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
Do nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
Comes occasion
I suppose
When all seems lost
But so it goes;
Say nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
Do nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
Sweetest tempest
Is a muse
‘Spite your lonely
She may refuse
Say nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
Do nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
All my lifetime
Still I chase
Glancing smiles,
A friendly face;
Say nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
Do nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
It’s a cycle
We all know
Riding out those
Ebbs and flows;
Say nothing,
Hope’s on its way.
Do something,
Hope’s on its way.
