I asked Sophie for ideas, and she had a nice little tune that went something like, "nah nah nah nah, I won, I won the medal …" I thought it was cheating to collaborate, so I took a different route. This started out as a gut-bucket honky-tonk tune, took a slight detour through Elvis Costello-doing-Noel Coward territory, and ended up kinda where it started, as an early Jayhawks kinda thing.
lyrics
You know we've tried
But every party's gotta close it's doors
So put down your glass
And hold me one more time, for old times' sake
You only lied
Whenever you closed your eyes
I've got no time to count the souls
Your wandering heart collects
I won, you lost, who's next?
Night after night
We closed the bars all down the street
The whiskey's still flowing
But the good times are all over
The life of the party
Becoming the clown
And I'm tired of being everybody's
Favorite drunken wrecks
I won, you lost, who's next?
Loving the chaos was our
Only routine
If you were my candle, maybe I
I was your kerosene
Can't keep track of all the scars
Your dreaming soul neglects
I won, you lost, who's next?
And now that you're free
I hear you're stepping out with all the boys
I'll save you a seat
If you ever wanna join me
And when I think of all the things I've lost,
The worst, my heart suspects ...
You won, I lost, who's next?
You won, I lost, who's next?
