about

Lawdy, lawdy, after weeks and weeks, Doug wrote an actual song!

Ever since May 5th, when several local friends posted their reminiscences about the devastating tornado of 5/5/89, I have been talking about that night with my Molly. We have discussed this before, but only this year have I really come to realize that, despite the fact that this took place nearly ten years before we would properly meet and begin our own journey together, we were both out and driving around that night on the exact same streets in the aftermath of the tornado. We surely may have passed each other on the otherworldly streets of Winston that night. Fertile ground for a certain kind of "what if" song, I thought - "How I Met Your Mother," in 3 minutes, 48 seconds, but all true..

I have NOT cracked this nut yet, but there is surely a strong song here, and I think I'm at least on the right path. And this is surely the closest I've come to writing an actual song in months and months.

lyrics

And in the aftermath, the power down
The lines, the limbs, the night gone green
The vigil candle flares
I went out searching for
Apocalypse and kicks
Everybody loves disaster flicks
From the comfort of their chair

They sent me through the maze,
the emerald falling labyrinth
No breadcrumbs, lost on city streets disguised
And so much later would I learn that you were there
Your own heart pulsing, you were
Finding your way home

If I had known your face
The parallels we traced
And what if we had met
A stage nobody set

All power's out in Buena Vista
nobody’s getting through tonight
we chased the paths of wind and lightning
and nothing is the same
nothing is the same

a left on Arbor now
I double back on Vernon
I am driving past your childhood home, again
and you are drifting
there are searchlights over Graylyn
we will pass each other
blinded, we are ghosts

If I had known your face
The parallels we traced
And what if we had met
A stage nobody set

All power's out in Buena Vista
nobody’s getting through tonight
we chased the paths of wind and lightning
and nothing is the same
nothing is the same
