about

This was for Albus' "one instrument, one voice" challenge. A rough demo, tracked live.

The music for this song, which really appeals to me, literally came to me in under 10 minutes, which usually either means 1) I've stumbled onto something really nice; or 2) I'm totally and inadvertently ripping something off. I haven't figured the second possibility out, so I'm going with the first, though I welcome any recognitions before I get myself sued. The lyrics, as always, was a more arduous task. I think I'm onto something I like, but I'd like to revisit this and write a few more drafts sometime down the road.

lyrics

Came home late to find you crying
No return, the pain inside
Even in this empty room
The angles and the corners
Leave no place to hide

You never give me any warning
Forgive me for my pins-and-needle style
The only way I know to hold you
Hide myself away for a little while

Can't fight those blues
When that river starts to rise
Don't let me drown inside your
January eyes
Can't find the bruise
All the scars you claim to prize
Don't let me drown inside your
January eyes

Brought your pills and navy blanket
Did you think I'd let your ghosts decide?
Sit and watch the headlights down below us
Waiting for the flooding to subside

Stay awhile inside this moment
Every time you sink I feel the sand
The place where you go, I can't follow
You speak another tongue and I can't
Understand

Can't fight those blues
When that river starts to rise
Don't let me drown inside your
January eyes
Can't find the bruise
All the scars you claim to prize
Don't let me drown inside your
January eyes

She said, "some days, I can't wake
Surrounded by a shell I'm scared to break
And every time you speak to me
It's like a long-lost voice from history"
