Dearest Martha,
I'm being called away
to fight these rebels
standing in our way
we are righteous
and we will have the day
so don't you worry
though i've gone to join the fray

I am nearly done
we have taken the field and their hope
I'm sure we've nearly won
I am overjoyed
to meet our newborn son
and put an end to the days
of carrying this gun

the battle drags on and on
the men and i are weary
rough-shod, faces wan
just last night, we were again set upon
I dreamt of your arms and times foregone

Dearest Martha,
it is with the deepest regret
that i write to you and your son
of a man to whom i owe a debt
He surely saved my life
by taking a bayonet
that was meant to end me
during yesterday's onset
your true love's final words
as he reached his life's sunset
were of you and his son
whom he regrettably never met

and so ends the ballad
of our hero and his wife
who fought for right and reason
and paid with his life
a land torn apart
by bitterness and strife
a life sent asunder
at the end of a knife
