This is actually the third draft of a tune from back in Round 10, which was the round that we spent two weeks on each tune. I liked this song, and it looks like we'll be playing it with my "Rock Lottery" band at the September FNMC show. Still needed another lyric draft, and in truth, it could probably use a few more. There's nothing particularly poetic about this tale of coming to grips with the powerlessness of words in comforting grieving friends. At least I feel like I've finally gotten that point across, unambiguously, in this draft.
lyrics
I heard the rumors in the air
Heard you shouting at the sky
There'll come no words to make it fair
No lightning lullaby
And I watched you tremble in the dark
I searched for what to say
A sympathetic spark
The days go by without a sign
the storms that brew above us
The winds that whistle through the pines
the spirits speaking of us
And I am just a fool to think I know
The words you need to hear
The tonic for your fear
Lay down your sorrows
Rest your cares
May you find peace in the end
I'll be beside you, should you need
A few simple words from a friend
No more kicking at the wind
today they'll put him in the ground
and part of you goes with him
these melodies remain the same
they just take a slower rhythm
you've lost your bearings in the night
And I can't fix what's missing
Helpless in this fight
Lay down your sorrows
Rest your cares
May you find peace in the end
I'll be beside you, should you need
A few simple words from a friend
No more kicking at the wind
