We visited our family's mountain cabin earlier this week for the first time in 5 or 6 years. That cabin is such a place of peace and inspiration for me, and I've written SO MANY songs up there. Pretty much the entire Solid Citizens catalog was written there. It was very comforting to walk in the door and immediately start writing, once again.
This song was definitely designed to be a duet; something that Molly and I could sing together. I've been very slowly trying to write some material for us to work on, and I think this one is a contender. Definitely started out as a Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings thing before it somehow veered closer to Civil Wars territory.
Lots of work still to do on the lyrics, but I like where this is going.
lyrics
Something almost unexpected
Unpredicted, long neglected
Thought I’d lost you, years gone by us
Don’t let blank years crucify us
Can we find a way?
No one’s made a promise we can
Heal what’s broken, where we began
Maybe we can light the sparks in
This new life, so on your marks, get
Set and go
Lord knows, things ain’t gonna be the same
Take us back to where we start
Can’t say neither of us stands to blame
Don’t go let us fall apart
