Well, I won't say I'm on a roll, exactly, but this is yet another "actual" song. Once again, a quick job: written in about an hour, and recorded with one mic, in one take.
The best way I could think of to wrap my head around the assignment was to lean towards the idea of a cow-punk narrative ballad. I saw the Old 97's play this week, so I was already kinda thinking in that vein. In my mind, this is a screaming track with heavy, slapback Telecasters. As for the Sinatra element ... well, there's a hint of crooning in the phrasing and melodies, but I admit that I didn't have many bright ideas to lean it in that direction.
lyrics
I met you in the moonlight and I never was quite clear
If what you said was what you meant or what you meant was what you fear
But I took you at your word; were you ever so undone?
Your composure ran me reckless, your desire left me numb
I saw shifting sands retreat
Beneath my feet
Forty times in forty nights, the daggers plunging in
The question marks, the don't-recalls, I saw the cracks begin
Were you ever where you wanted, would you ever swear to be
The one and only one and done, you said these words to me
When the light comes creeping in
Hey, where you been?
One thing she spoke true
She loved me through and through
Chased her smoking gun
Don't know how I
Lost her in the sun
I chased you through the alleys and I chased you through the night
And I came convinced confessions that you built were watertight
And I came convinced you lived to lie, you lied to live it down
And I could no longer well abide the shadows as we drown
Could you look me in the eye
Not satisfied
One thing she spoke true
She loved me through and through
Chased her smoking gun
Don't know how I
Lost her in the sun
Well, you called me in the middle of a nightmare-riddled rest
And you told me that your shadow gone and put you to the test
And you told me you're in trouble, and you cried out in the night
But I had heard enough of stories, and I hung you up in spite
And that's the last I heard from you
And I pray it's true
One thing she spoke true
She loved me through and through
Chased her smoking gun
Don't know how I
Lost her in the sun
