Got a little proggy this week for Susan's assignment. I wanted to do something that had some musical space to it, and this indeed started pretty sparse with a spare arrangement and long, slow melodic phrases. Of course, then I got chugging along, and it didn't end up as "spacy" as I intended. It was also intended to have a lyric about emotional and spiritual distance, but with all the news of the week, it took a natural turn towards death and love.
One thing I did notice though: I intended, musically, to start out in a vaguely Pink Floyd-ish place, and since I was learning a couple of Civil Wars songs this week, I thought I'd lean towards that sort of (melo?) dramatic crooning style, in terms of melody and performance. What I found out, of course, was that if the Civil Wars fronted Pink Floyd, well, you'd just end up with something very like Radiohead. So, there's that.
lyrics
feel the sun
hold it for yourself
it comes only for you
for a while
then it's gone
these dreams we hold dear
dreams from year to year
our fears subside
no seas unchurned
there's no return
see your stone
what words shall we say?
you form all that you are from
sculptor's clay
then it's gone
each day all time told
time does make us bold
then we forget
