Another total rush job, but I kinda like it. Strangely enough, I actually wrote the lyrics first. Not particularly good lyrics, but an actual coherent idea, for once. I began with the idea that I wanted to have a lyrical structure akin to Dawes' "Million Dollar Bill," which features no real chorus, just a non-verbal musical hook. But I caved at the last minute and added a lyric line over the final chorus. Which still leaves a fairly oddball structure.
lyrics
what if this were our last good day
would you know where the break began?
would the faults be forced or the blame be square
where the bones all collect their demands
There's a crack in the frame that we couldn't have seen
That's the place where the dark gets in
And I'd patch it with grace and the mercy of blood
But it's never the varnish, worn thin
So maybe it's morn, and the day has begun
That the nighttime will whisper goodbyes
And we step unaware through the motions again
That will lead us through evening's cold prize
So, what if this were our last good day
Would you hold me again, while it's light?
And I'll promise again to forgot to recall
That we've never been promised the night
I don't want to see the last time
hold on til the pain subsides
