about

I thought that Daniel's original idea was intriguing; it was certainly something I don't think I've ever done before! It made me think of Robbie Robertson's "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" and Ry Cooder's sublime soundtrack to "Paris, Texas." Both of those sent me in a more noir direction. So I kept the basic structural idea of Daniel's original draft, including the E-Esus verse figure, but I injected minor-key elements into his chorus figure, and rewrote the melodies and lyrics. Artie's draft solidified the structures and major key elements of the original, and Sydney's draft took it even farther in a positive, inspirational direction, but neither really fit the noir-ish element that I wanted to hear in the original draft, so I didn't use much from their versions.

Not sure this adds up to much, but it was fun.

lyrics

I probably would have done the same thing anyway
put the same foot in front of the other one
taking the same steps towards a fate sealed in broken contracts and century wax
as if I’d ever had a chance to make a false move
some other way to prove I could’ve done it right
but you were always on the other end of the line
trying to find a way to make the connection real
from radio static and phone wire to
to a cinematic blast of flame and fire
and I don’t know if I’m any good any more

far and away from your rolling rivers
far and away from your churning seas
deeper than pain all your love delivers
carry me, carry me
out of the light

and now you’re standing in the wreckage
somewhere south of country club nights of
smoking embers and dirty martini glasses and
wondering what’s next
Jim knew Chante and Chante knew Eric and Eric had a cousin in Darlington
who used to come out to gigs at the Speedway
that’s where it all went down
in the beginning at least
but I should have known there was something crooked in the setup
so now I guess I’ll take down the number for the next polar expedition
and hope I’ve got some warmer gloves next time

far and away from your rolling rivers
far and away from your churning seas
deeper than pain all your love delivers
carry me, carry me
out of the light
