I like this one. I woke up yesterday from one of those horrible recurring dreams where I'm trying to run across a field or up a hill, and my legs just turn to achey jello, and I can barely move through the molasses-thick air. When I started to think about this assignment, that felt like an obvious match for a Nightmare on Elm Street kind of scenario.
So, what's going on in the lyrics? Some kind of unnamed dread, some sense of being chased by an unnameable fear. Pursued, and unable to escape. Who knows? Sounds like a nightmare to me.
In any case, it was fun to play drums again. Now that I think about it, I often have that sense of my limbs moving through molasses when I try to play drums, too.
lyrics
I think I thought I’d found the safe house
Somewhere out beyond the pines
And there were shadows moving slowly
I couldn’t see you through the vines
I felt the ground beneath me shifting
Some kinda cold backwater sludge
And I could swear that’s when I knew you’d
Become my jury and my judge
Does anybody even know the score this time?
Cause I can’t even say who did the crime
And you can say you don’t remember
Another promise you won’t keep
It’s like your legs are made of stone when you’re
Running in your sleep
And I remember how you’d tremble
But did it ever run so deep
You used to fear you’d find your answer
Should you ever fall asleep
And I don’t think I found you honest
The phantom tales you’d love to spin
But just last night I came up choking
Had that same old dream again
Does anybody even know the score this time?
Cause I can’t even say who did the crime
And you can say you don’t remember
Another promise you won’t keep
It’s like your legs are made of stone when you’re
Running in your sleep
