Man, I was looking forward to this assignment, but once again, time was not on my side. The music that Eddie described is very much my wheelhouse, or was, in any case, when I was in college. I've definitely borrowed from the Smiths, Echo, and New Order for various assignments in the past, so I started out heading in Church territory before I got sidetracked by a variety of Cure tropes. I enjoyed working on the track earlier in the week, but once again, I never got around to writing a proper song. The melodies are undercooked, and the lyrics are pure tripe, even though I did attempt to dabble in Kilbey-esque faux mysticism.
I was hoping to try to find a connecting ground between my tastes of yesteryear and the more singer-songwriter vibe I'm on these days, but I'm afraid that I didn't get too far with that, so this track will just have exist as a fun exercise in pastiche, rather than anything usable, I'm afraid.
lyrics
sirocco winds
heavens hold you once again
starling hour
trace and keep your foundling flower
guide you in
scouts remove the firing pin
if there's moment when
the diamond becomes the night
every time I touch your golden hand
my resistance turns to sand
passing from the oracle to hear
excavating worship commandeered
if you chance should find that you are pleased
to acknowledge gifts as these
simple icons fashioned from the earth
oh, Salihah, judge my worth
your breathless grace
poisoned as the spider's web enlaced
your deathless eyes
unblinking as the centuries give rise
I make no sound
treading on the point of sacred ground
if I should bow before your
skein of stars unwind
every time I touch your golden hand
my resistance turns to sand
passing from the oracle to hear
excavating worship commandeered
if you chance should find that you are pleased
to acknowledge gifts as these
simple icons fashioned from the earth
oh, Salihah, judge my worth
