As legend has it, Steely Dan had a song called "The Second Arrangement" that was meant for their album Gaucho. At some point during the recording, an inept tape op somehow managed to erase the first couple minutes of the master tape. Nobody could bear to start the thing over from scratch, so they just moved on and the song was never released.
This week's song Sea Of Blue met a similar fate. I know I wrote a song with this title, and I can picture a handwritten lyric sheet, but I can't remember anything else about the song. I know I tried to record it in the summer of "89 in my basement boiler room apartment at Berklee, but I must have screwed it up somehow and abandoned it.
So this Sea A Blue is a totally new composition that shares the same title. I'll never know what happened to the original, but I'd like to think that three decades later, I'm able to write something slightly better.
lyrics
Watching you wave from the shore
I don’t know when I’ve loved you more
are you waving goodbye or hello
I’m feeling the pull from below
And I’m lost in a sea of blue
No boats come to my rescue
I’m lost in a sea of blue
The sky above is clear and bright
But clouds can still form overnight
I didn’t sign on for this trip
But the captain goes down with his ship
And I’m lost in a sea of blue
No boats come to my rescue
I’m lost in a sea of blue
Just throw me a line or cast a net
I’m caught in the tide and I’m getting wet
Should I make my way back to land
I hope you will hold out your hand
And I’m lost in a sea of blue
No boats come to my rescue
I’m lost in a sea of blue
