OK, Tim - I hope this songs adheres closely enough to the assignment for ya! Corky wanted OLD-skool country, and a Willie-esque cowboy waltz ought to be perfectly appropriate.
I've had the basic concept of this song floating around for a long time, which grew out of the daydream of a singer finding himself singing a slow song, only to find the object of his affection dancing in someone else's arms. Seemed like a rather obvious sad-sack setup, but I couldn't think of another song that employs the same concept. Am I missing something?
In any case, clearly this song was meant to be sung by someone with a much deeper voice than mine, although, in my mind, it wasn't a smooth crooner but someone that sounded a lot like Townes Van Zandt.
lyrics
as she steps on the dance floor
and the lights start to dim
I step to the microphone
heart filled to the brim
she sways to the tune
I wrote for her alone
I swim in the deepest pain
I’ve ever known
Well, I poured all my love
in the words of this song
words should have said
to her face, all along
and now I’ve found strength
to sing what's in my heart
what can not be,
in life, becomes art
I’m just a singer of love songs
that’s all that I’ve been
I fill up the dance floor
and watch love begin
if I made her love me
if I’d ever win
a singer of love songs
I’d ne’er be again
a chorus and verse, and she
smiles to the band
a tap on her shoulder
she turns, takes his hand
they’re waltzing and spinning
she’s lingering long
she’s falling so fast to the
sound of my song
I’m just a singer of love songs
that’s all that I’ve been
I fill up the dance floor
and watch love begin
if I made her love me
if I’d ever win
a singer of love songs
I’d ne’er be again
