After spending 5 days in bed with the flu I started working on the song again - which I hadn't liked at all to begin with. I kept the basic chord scheme and concept but that's about all. It's been entirely reworked lyrically (which I'm still not happy with), structurally and sonically. This one's better, but still not a winner in my book.
lyrics
I remember when you overdosed that night
Right before a big day
You ran away from the hospital’s advice
And showed up anyway
As you laughed at death denied
Then it started stalking from within
And you began to shrink in
So rail thin like winter’s coldest day
No time for might-have-beens
This time it came to stay
Still you rage
With every bit of your might
Still you rage
Against the dying of the light
So you threw a final bash
Summoned all your friends and your loved ones
And let the music blast
If you were going to go
You’d go out loud and fast
But you’re not finished with us yet
Pouring forth your sunshine
In song’s rhyme and paintings gleaming wet
In everything you do
There lives a part of you
Still you rage
With every bit of your might
Still you rage
Against the dying of the light
Still you rage, still you rage
burn and rave, burn and rave
burn and rave on through the night
Now it’s three years past that ill-predicted end
Smiles, tears and encores of birthdays
Continue to extend
I raise a glass to you
My lionhearted friend
Still you rage
With every bit of your might
Still you rage
Against the dying of the light
